Bard saves my hen!- EVERYONE NEEDS a barred rock rooster!

Pics
Bard actually got into a bit of trouble yesterday... I noticed he is overmating on 2 of the hens. I separated him into a kennel next to the coop so he can see them until the hen saddles and antibacterial creme comes. I also ordered them a run/playpen to keep them separated. Bard HATES the kennel and being separated but I can't let the hens get hurt and he already scratched one of pretty bad. Poor guys so big. Maybe I will write a book about him...

I separated Bard into the nesting box last night so he doesn't injure them at night. This morning I let the girls out and down comes, you guessed it: Bard! Somehow he managed to nudge open the nesting box door... Oh, and of course, he immediately jumped on the ladies.... He then ran up to me and pecked my boot, once, as if saying," How dare you separate me from my ladies!?! This is revenge!" I then scooped him up and talked some sense into him. I love this rooster 🤣 ❤️ 🥰

Had a Coopers Hawk go after one of our Barred Hens and the BR Roo was all over that hawk like a cheap suit, Bad out come for the hawk. Even after the kill the Roo would strut around it for 15 minutes giving it a few more for insurance. The hens took shelter in the under brush squawking and yelling for a good hour. Best Rooster we've had.

So, yesterday morning, I let my 10 hens and 1 barred rock rooster out to free range while I read so I can watch them. I have done this many times with no problems. While I was reading and feeding them treats, I noticed one of my hens was starting to wander a bit, but this is usually no issue. Then, as quick as a flash I hear a wooshing sound and my rooster flew 10 feet away and started fighting with something. I moved closer to get a better view and he was fighting a HUGE hawk trying to grab my hen. The hawk kept trying to attack him from above, but Bard returned each attack with slashing and clawing. Then, Bard jumped at the hawk, and I thought he had killed it. Luckily, the hawk got up, ruffled his feathers, and flew off. Also FYI, I was trying to get involved in the fight but It was hard to do as I was trying to put the other chickens in the coop, get the hen to safety, I didn't want to get hurt, I didn't want Bard to get hurt, and I didn't want any of the hens to get hurt. Oh and I forgot to mention that not only is Bard THE BEST at protecting the girls, but he is very sweet and cuddily. I HIGHLY recommend getting a barred rock rooster. (Hopefully the hawks ok, they are pretty tough, right???)
I have one also, he is awesome! He never gets any meal worms when I give them out because all six of the hens are killing each other to get as many as they can. So one time, he was sitting alone on a roost and I thought, this is a good time to give him a chance to get some. I held them out and he started picking them out of the dish and dropping them on the ground for his hens. He wouldn't even eat one! And when the hens go up to lay their eggs, he paces around at the bottom of the ladder muttering to himself until they're done, and then he does the little "I just laid an egg!" song right along with the hen. I was afraid to get a rooster after all I've seen on youtube about them, but I LOVE HIM!!
