Paint them. Or put a dab of paintable putty-like stuff and then paint them. They will still be visible but much less obvious.

Mine bothered me a lot too until I painted the ceiling for other reasons. I still had to kinda decide not to be bothered but it became a lot easier to decide that.

A grinder with a cut off disc would make short work of any screws poking through.

Do protect your face with a plastic mask or googles while doing this!!!

Thank you—I had done a bit of research and this seemed to be the number one approach to remove the sharp nail points. I’m going to move in another direction but will keep it in mind.

Rodents might be more of a problem when insulation is involved rather than moisture. Besides, ventilation should be through the soffits and foam and a ceiling would block that.

How thick is your plywood? I guess you could grind/cut the nails off but seems like a lot of work to me.
Idk anyone that uses screws to shingle with and roofing nails only come in certain lengths and I know 1/2" isn't an option and I don't think 3/4" is either.
I think what you're thinking is doable but most foamboard isn't cheap either. I know there's the cheap plain white kind but how much is it and the thin plywood?
If it was me I'd put down osb then plywood on that so it's a 1", 1 1/4" or whatever so nails don't go through. If plywood is down add another layer of plywood. That's imo the easiest route.
Kind of sounds/looks like you've already started nailing. No help in that case.

The roof is 1/2” plywood. We chose that because the rafters are 16” on center and the thought of hoisting 3/4” plywood up onto the roof area was unappealing. I really enjoy the building process but I don’t have any training and have learned everything from the internet. And the internet said 1.25” nails were the way to go. There is underlayment and architectural shingles and I hoped the nails wouldn’t poke through but it was a bit naive. We’ve decided not to try to cut the points off. Instead we’ll put up strips of 1x2 over the rows of nail points ( flush against the ceiling) And continue applying the shingles w these longer nails. I’ll post a pic once that’s done. About 1/2 of the shingles are currently up.

Yes, we may still go this route. I know painting will help make them less noticeable.

Here is a picture of the coop. The openings are not there because I’m only cutting them open as im ready to work on them. I’ll post another when it’s done, likely spring.
It is 8’x4’.

BYC is an incredible resource for anyone with an interest in chickens and other related topics. To deprive oneself because of a single post seems extreme.

I have been on this forum for six years. Rarely have I seen negative posts, for the large majority interactions are inquisitive and positive. I do use other forums (car related, politics...) and have encountered the type you describe; that this forum has managed, for the most part, to avoid this type of interaction is one of it's great achievements.

The poster you refer to has been on this forum since 2016 and has over 32,000 posts. I do not follow him but have seen his name pop up over the years. I know that our moderators keep close tabs on negative, aggressive, self aggrandizing, etc. posts; if he had been what you describe I like to think he would have been reprimanded or had his membership suspended.

I will also say my initial reaction to his post questioned what his purpose was. I reacted but found a way to express that with gentle words that do not give offence.

As I said BYC is a very positive and useful site. I hope it continues that way. Sometimes a deep breath is the best course of action!!

It obviously depends on the height of the coop, but I have to say that my scalp immediately flinched when I saw those protruding nails!

The protruding nails shows that you used the right length nails. If you were to use shorter nails, you would eventually have issues with your shingles. Same thing will happen if you try to grind them flush. I would just paint over them as it's "just a coop".
