Barn into open air coop conversion

I have been very slack in updating my coop construction.

I painted the coop a barn red. I really like the color, and it was cheap and premixed! :)

I plan on keeping at least one stall in my barn for future horse or some such large animal. :)

I really love my dutch door. Thanks to aart for the inspiration!

Here, I have started construction of my raised garden bed along the front of the coop.

Eventually, I plan on painting the whole barn red. I would like to get something besides the osb first though. Did I mention that I really, really hate painting osb?

I do not know why the bottom of this pic is this funny color.

This is it, as far as the coop/enclosed run goes. We do plan on building an "outdoor" run along the left side of the coop within the next few weeks. The girls seem to really like the openness of the coop. I will have to put up some clear tarps this winter for wind block, but our heat here in East Texas is the biggest problem, along with the humidity. We thought more of an "open air" type coop would suit our situation better than one more enclosed.

Thanks Lisa! It took us some time to get it all done, but now that it's finished, it was well worth it. Now we just need to start on the outside pen, and maybe start on the other coops, LOL. I'm not getting in any hurry for those, but I do plan on getting some more chickens and maybe doing a little breeding. We'll see. :)

Looks great! You are no longer 'henless'!

I am in the process of building out the coop partition for a new batch of chooks, adding roosts, feeders etc and a run..and extending my main run.
It's fun once you know how!
Wish I had room and money for a rooster grow-out pen...cause if you hatch or even just buy, there's gonna be some roosters that need stewing.

Rooster grow out pen is a great idea! Can't wait to see all your updates. Seems like with chickens, you never are truely finished! :)

@tjo804 ~ Thanks! The color turned out looking really well.

Update time!!

My chickens are now 18 & 17 weeks old. I got this on Tuesday.

My first egg! The egg on the right is a ceramic egg.

I started out with 21 chicks. I never lost any. As they have gotten bigger, it has become obvious that I needed more room in my coop. DH & I planned on building and outside run, but just haven't had the chance to do it yet. I decided to sell 6 of my chickens to give the rest of them plenty of room until the run is built. The new owner came and picked them up the day I found the first egg. I didn't get an egg yesterday, so I probably sold the egg layer. Just my luck!!!!

DH and I have started on the outside run. It will be a slow go, since both of us are working a lot so have to squeeze in run construction when we can.

I have to admit, digging holes with the new tractor is so much easier than with post holes. We should have bought one of these 20 years ago, instead of getting old ones and trying to make them work!

The posts are in and cemented. Yes, one is significantly higher than the others. One of the 8' poles warped, so we had to get one of the 10' foot ones. We'll just have to get out the trusty chainsaw and cut it off. :)

The outside run will be 20'x20'. That should give them plenty of room. We will be putting tin over a section of it next to the coop. This will help give more shade and keep rain from blowing into the coop area.

This is my little garden area at the end of my coop. I will be putting another one of these along the side of the run once it is done.

Thanks for looking! I'll be back to update as we progress. :)
