To anyone who is actually interested in learning about the breed: the barnevelder yahoo group is full of very nice and helpful people. If you want to take part in improving the breed, it's a great bunch of folks to be associated with.

My goodness... I think Katy, myself, and everyone else have been very helpful. We have provided honest opinions and feedback about the breed in general. I'm not sure where this thread got so off-topic.

Barnevelders are a beautiful breed. In the US however their egg color is seriously lacking. And while they may be classified as a "dark egg layer", again in the US this is not the case. Marans, Welsummers, and the few Pendesencas available definitely come out way ahead of the Barnies as far as egg color is concerned.

I will be the first to admit a lot of my other birds layed darker than my Barnies, and much better to boot. Dark pullet eggs might be considered a 4 on the Marans Egg Chart. And the older hens barely layed threes.

I have always told people when asked that the breed is beautiful, but don't get them for the wrong reasons. If you want dark eggs, they aren't the breed you are looking for.

Who made you an expert on barnevelders anyway?

If you go onto established forums with Barnevelder breeders and say something like that, I'm not sure I can say to much. I certainly wouldn't be very understanding or helpful to say the least.

Ugh, This reminds me of a photography forum that I belong to. Someone will post a picture and someone else points out things that they could have done to improve the pictures, only trying to help that person learn and the original poster get's so offended and uptight that they could pop a cork. If you post a picture and don't want anyone telling you how you could improve your bird, then maybe you should say that in your post. The people on here that take their time to help, are only trying to help. And I for one am very thankful that they take their time to point out things that could be and should be improved, especially if I am going to be breeding birds to sell.

I consider myself a newbie - have only been on BYC a couple months and although I have owned chickens before, am on my first pair of barnevelders. I'm not a breeder - the chickens are for pets and eggs, but I still like to have pretty chickens.

The people on BYC have been a great help to me with all my questions. I have also learned a lot about the barnevelders from this thread. Thanks, BlueHen, for coming up with the idea and starting it.

I thought Chook-in-eire & Amazon.doc were very helpful - giving information about the breed standards and links to colors & info. Others were also helpful by posting pictures of their barnevelders & different egg colors. Even though I'm not a breeder, I was still dissappointed to see how far off my 1 barnevelder is in her coloring - but was glad for the honesty.

BlueHen, you probably have had less to learn than I have about barnevelders, so maybe that's why don't see the info on this thread as helpful as I have. At the very least, you've discovered your rooster may not be the right one for your breeding program, but it looks like you've already got another one in mind. What other information were you looking for (not that I can answer, but if you have a specific question, I'm sure someone else can help you)?

I am often jealous of the color varieties that exist in various breeds -- in other countries, of course, not here.

If only more folks had been smart enough to import legally, before importation got so expensive and complicated!

You I agree have been helpful but I know I am not the only one the feels that they have been attacked when they started posting on this site this is not the first thread I have felt this way in and as far as I can tell she is not an experienced breeder she has never even had any hen lay yet I have had barnies for 4 years now.
