Barnevelder anyone lets see them?

Wow. This thread sure went around the barn and back since I last checked.

Barnevelders in the US need much improvement to be anything near the original birds. I just drool to look at the pictures of the birds and egg color. It will take years of work by many breeders to improve the birds here in the US. We are working with a very limited gene pool.

Barnevelders are very different in personality and I agree that they are friendly and layed back.

The egg color of most Barnevelders in the US are not really considered "dark". I would rate mine as average in for eggs in the US.

I have mentioned in the forum and by pm to many people who have asked me questions about my Barnevelders that my original birds came from Ideal and slowly I have added some by the few private breeders that I can find. These birds are a not the most vigorous and I have dealt with some leg issues in chicks.


We have a long way to go on this breed. I hope more people will consider raising them and work on improvement.

As a side note, for those who have followed the golden laced orpington project. The Barnevelder/Buff Orp pullets lay dark eggs like the Barnevelder.

Gosh, I just wish my Barnies would start laying again.
I like the dark brown eggs of some of my breeds and I do like the Barnie eggs but I was disappointed the first time the girls laid here. I knew it wouldn't be really dark but I didn't realize that they would be the same color of my black sex links.
I also hope to darken the color over time by selecting only the darkest eggs to raise chicks from but this is going to be a long hard road. Lots of time and dedication will hopefully pay off.
Gorgeous birds, beautiful eggs and some very large roos! If my Big Barnie doesn't stop growing he will be larger than my Jersey Giants! His little brother is in with the hens now because I'm not sure if Big Barnie wouldn't squash the girls!
I can't wait till they start laying so I can put some under my hens to hatch. I will be glad to send some to you to test out, Blue Hen, if you would like at that point. Save you a bit of money but I can't swear by the fertility. Give you new blood if any hatch well and they are pullets instead of a bunch of roos!
We'll work on getting some more nice lines of Barnies going in the US and maybe can get our flocks to where we want them.

I hopefully will be getting some Barnevelder chicks from Sandhill this year. We will just have to wait and see on how they develop.

I would be interested in a egg swap also. PM if you would like to swap.

Please, learn more about the breed before you set yourself up as a breeder. You can start by joining the Barnevelder yahoogroup. But I warn you -- they aren't yes-men either. They'll give you honest opinions, so if you don't want honesty then don't bother.​

Stuff it your just looking for a fight and Im already on the yahoo group and like you its been noooooooooo help Im sorry that your llife is so empty that this is what makes you feel importart. Who made you an expert on barnevelders anyway? You said I posted on Byc looking for input read the thread title agian and show me where i was looking for you o come on and be negitive.
