I think they may get more popular, but I don't think they'll ever be a real craze -- because their eggs simply aren't dark enough.

They are nice birds, though!

Bluehenhatchery.com :

I got my birds from darkeggs.com I think now they must of crossed them for the egg color. im am working on getting a rooster from the imported stock should be here in june

I read somewhere that the guy who has darkeggs.com gets his chicks from other hatcheries like Ideal and Privitt which could explain the variations.

Im working on a blue laced Barnevelder project and I am also going to be working with a guy who has imported all of his stock and has great egg color. With this combo I think they could be the next copper marans.

I'll have to see pics of the eggs before I get impressed. I've heard too much about "dark" barnie eggs that simply weren't!

Not trying to offend but those are not very dark for what's supposed to be a dark egg..... my RIR's lay that dark of an egg.

I'll get you some pictures of my RIR eggs tomorrow.

Yeah, sorry, but those aren't very dark as compared to "real" dark egglayers.

Here is a pic of my Welsummer and Marans eggs (from left to right -- bantam araucana, Welsummer, bantam cochin, wheaten Marans):

I like my barnies, but I don't expect too much from them when they get to laying age.

You can learn a lot about barnevelders from serious barnie folks if you join the barnevelder yahoogroup. You can find it here:

Here is the color of eggs my barnies came from. Note that this is not my pic, but a pic from the auction where the eggs were purchased:

Never said they where as dark as welsummer or as dark as marans yet but I can certainly work on it I get some eggs that get close to your welsummers. The eggs that your Barnevelder stock come from are just like all of the eggs in the pics someone just took the pics in the dark. I would wrather have a barnevelder than a RIR an day of the week. I think everyone knows they are not the best dark egg layers because what we have in the country just isnt that dark. But a well marked Barnevelder to me is prettier than almost anything out there. When I get my blue laced line up and running I dont think there will be anything better to have on top of the fact I just love being around these sweet little birds, I can watch them for hours.
