I have been working on Barnies for only 2 years. If I hatch eggs from someone else and they show Wellie traights I do not keep them. I just do not have the experience to know how to breed those out.
I think the more experienced folks will stop by to chime in as time allows

I personally would not use them for breeding, but that is just me. It would take some time to breed the unwanted traits out and still you may have recessive pop ups out of them, but if you wanted to use them you would select the birds that most resemble the Barnevelder in type and feather pattern and breed them back to a pure Barnevelder. Grow out the first generation chicks and again select the ones that are closest to the Barnie type and feather pattern and breed them back to a pure Barnevelder and the same with each subsequent generation until you have birds that are breeding pure. I would imagine that it would take as many as 4 or more generations to breed out the Welsummer traits. Hope this helps and I hope that tls_ranch stops by to give you her opinion as well.
I hatched all 3 Barnie eggs you sent me as "extra". 2 boys and one girl. Can not wait to see how they fill out. They are about 6 weeks now. The girl is much smaller than the boys though.

Hi Girl! Glad they are doing great. Yes the girls are smaller than the boys and these Johan birds are very slow to mature. I have several of them growing out right now along with some Olive Eggers, Wellies and Marans that hatched June 3rd, and even though they are all the same age, the Barnies are much smaller and look much younger than the others, they are even slow to feather out.
I can't wait to see photos of them.
I have a young gal that is 4 mos. old and she looks like a 2 mos old. I also have another girl that is 2.5 mos old that looks like she is just now 6 weeks, she is the only girl that I hatched from this years batch of eggs from Johan.

So what line(s) would the 3 that I have be from?
I am thinking I will grow out both roos and keep one this fall as a replacement for my guy who will be 3 by next breeding season. I hope they grow out to compliment what I have
How old do you keep your breeders to be before they start to get "too" old?

They are pure Johan as well, just from birds that I hatched from him the year before. The first set of eggs I got from him, one hatched, a roo. The second batch of eggs I got from him not too long after the first only 2 hatched, one pullet and one roo. My best friend has the other roo and I have the first roo hatched and the pullet from the second batch of eggs from Johan. I am going to try and have eggs shipped in from Johan next spring as well for fresh blood. The eggs I got from him this spring only 2 hatched, a boy and a girl. I am slowly building a small flock of pure Johan birds. I do not have any other Barnevelders from any other lines.

You'll will need to use pure barnevelders (correctly marked ones) in order to breed the "wellie" type coloring out. It is up to you, as it could take you a few years. I would only do it if these were exceptional layers of well colored eggs and you wanted to keep those traits.
I haven't been on much because I'm just busy My DH has been really busy fighting fire all over the west and the heat here has me busy with keeping trees, plants and chickens alive. My girls are still laying pretty good, but I have two broody hens that won't quit. I've had to dip their bellies in water a few times to cool them down. They keep going back to the nest boxes in 105 heat. The silly hens even crowd into one box and swelter together.
