Merry Christmas Everyone. We got about 5" of snow as it snowed all day here. Unexpected to boot. First time we've had snow on Christmas day in a long time!
It's a very small pullet egg and I suspect #2 is guilty of it, I saw her nosing around a few days ago in the nest boxes but didn't even give it a thought when I saw it. Guess I was so used to not getting any eggs from that coop I didn't put 2 and 2 together.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas. Last week I too recieved the gift of my pullets laying, they are 6months. Pretty sure both are laying. One is laying in the nest & one out in the coop. I will need to start checking every day now I guess. My hatchery Cookoo Marans don't lay this dark when they lay. One is a dark speckled & the other a smooth dark egg. The speckled one tends to be in the coop. Its funny, I'm not even breeding, no way too but yet I keep get excited seeing a really dark egg. I really like the quality of Royce's birds, thanks for wonderful quality birds (I hatched out his eggs).
Why is it when poop is stuck to the egg & gently rub it off under warm water the color comes off with it too? Only happens on the really dark eggs. Here's the eggs pictured with store bought whites. My 6 birds most have taken a break, my rhode Island is still laying so the light brown is her's.
I got an egg for a Christmas present too. Not a Barnie egg, but my light brahma came back from her molt and gave me a Christmas egg! Yay, back to getting eggs!
from taking a quick pre-christmas trip with my family I missed a lot of the posts and still have to go back an look at them. We had a good trip and thankfully came back home to no problems, live pets and healthy chickens. It froze HARD while we were gone, but luckly no pipes broke. I did have to toss a bunch of eggs that were frozen solid because our neighbor who watched the place didn't collect them Most did get fed to the dogs...so I guess it wasn't a complete waste of eggs.
My 1588 bator looks like it's doing it's job and holding rock steady temps. All the eggs I set from the blue project look to be developing well. I'm experimenting again with a dry hatch...no added water exept a splash the first day. Aircells look about the right size despite the low humidity and I only pulled 2 eggs early on.
I'm excited about having a good NYD hatch Chanting here: lots of blue chicks..lots of blue chicks
Happy Holidays!
Trisha
PS congrats to those of you who finally got eggs and I saw some nice pics of barnies too
