Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Ok half my post disappeared !!!! I wasnt commenting on Faykokos birds when talking about faults!

I was thinking... wow!

Not the best picture, but I'm trying to determine, which is the preferred color of lacing, the lighter hen on the left or the darker on the right. also, silly question, but how many points do you count on the roo? I think too many?

Not to get picking on YOU, but be careful getting too picky on your birds (been there, done that =:~)
If his comb is well set, firm, clean sided and no hint of a side sprig be very happy....... points on a comb of good size and shape are such a minor deduction. Points for back shape, breast shape and condition are the biggies for general exam and lack of breed type is the most important 'defect' that you can have. So, kudos for being aware of points but never do what I did and get so picky on a minor "point" -- humor intended

The SOP states "reddish brown", but it also says well defined in lacing. "The outer lacing to be distinct yet not so heavy as to give a black appearance to the bird in the show pen."

So based on that, I'd say the girl on the left.

Ok trying this again. I was posting from an ipad before and don't know what happened to my the rest of my post. So sorry....I didn't mean in anyway to direct the "fault" comments towards Faykoko's birds. This is what I ment to say before the part where I rambled on aobut faults in general...LOL.

I like the lacing on the hen on the left. She has nice clean lacing and nice yellow legs on all three of them by the way:)

I would say the rooster has 6 points. Nothing to worry about I think the goal is to stay between 5-6 points. But don't worry too much about combs...they can be fixed pretty easy. My old big blue has a huge coarse comb...but most of his sons have near perfect combs.

The idea about comb faults got me started thinking about all the other faults I've seen in barnevelders....that's where I started rambling about faults LOL.

THIS is what I ment to say about faults in general...more serious things I've seen about barnevelders that need to be addressed by careful culling and better selection overtime.

Just some DQ traits I have seen so far in just a few years breeding in most of the Barnevelders lines (kc, vb, Johan etc.)
White in the earlobe
White in the wings tail, and hackle
Wry tail
Side sprigs
Split wing
Crooked keel
Roach back
Feather stubs on shanks and toes
Squirrel tail
White tail fluff
Shafting and other color/lacing issues

The answer is simply to breed and cull as you go..and try to select for the best to move forward with. These " bad traits" are lurking around in the back ground as many are recessive or require a combination of genes to show. With barnevelders we don't have the luxury of "starting over" by getting established master breeder lines that have been bred and shown for years like rocks and RIR etc. there is so much that needs work...but it's a fun challenge for me.

It's difficult to see the lacing on the hen to the right, as I think she is standing in a more shaded area. Even so, though, I think she has a better ground color (I don't think they should be too light brown/red/buff almost like the New Hampshire base color), so if her lacing is pretty decent, she'd get my vote. She also appears to have a pretty good back line. The cock bird looks nice (tail, color) but I can't tell whether his wing carriage is a bit low. I see nothing wrong with his comb, but it's hard to tell from this picture. Nice birds anyway ....
PS I think it's difficult to get the good "sheen" in the feathers if the base color is too light. DS

I got some pullet eggs from my Barnie pullets this week. These 3 are from today.

The color looks darker in person. Not the darkest eggs I've gotten from my barnies. I still only have about 3 maybe 4 pullets laying so far out of 14 pullets/hens.

My "cornevelder" pullets are starting to lay too.

Again not the darkest egg from that line, but seems darker in person. I only have about 3 girls laying out of 9 pullets/hens.

I have about 30+ hens/pullets from all 3 lines (blues, barnies and cornevelders) Once they all start laying I'll be culling down for egg color. I will need to make room for the next generations, but I'm finally getting down to a more manageable number. Just about 2 months ago I had over 60 birds!!!

I have also separated my pure barnies to one side of the coop...by next month I should have some hatching eggs and start setting some for myself:)
