Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

..Honestly I would have used the chance to introduce silver based Marans. I intend to catch up on that, or I use english silver duckwing Welsumer.
I agree, had I had access to silver based Marans, for my silver project or copper blues for my blues, I would have used them,
however, if you use silver Welsummers, I'd recommend you talk to Hen-Gen from the coop, as they have mentioned the tenacity of 'autosomal red' in the shoulders of their silver Welsummer males

..........

That's the reason why this dutch breeder made imports aswell

Do You know, the reason why the english breeder has still this dark eggs?
They are not to shy to make crossings with Marans.
........
I disagree with that premise
In NZ, where I live, we don't have Marans, but there are some strains of Barnies that do lay dark eggs, not the colour of extreme Marans, but very similar to the colour you've shown, but a good colour nonetheless and at a level that doesn't impact negatively on rate of lay
The Welsummer and the Langshan lay poorer coloured eggs than the good strains of Barnies

So its a matter of selecting for it, and as you know the lesser the selection pressure the slower the gain (or no selection pressure if pure show pen aesthetics are selected for) so since wildtype is not brown, you are gonna get atavistic return

This is a picture of one of my Barnevelder eggs next to a Marans egg. I like this color for a Barnevelder egg. Not dark enough? 4 years ago my eggs were lighter, but egg color is one of the traits I've been selecting for along with nice lacing, etc. How about the shape? Most of my Barnevelder eggs do not have very obvious pointy ends, is that a Barnevelder egg trait?

Fine ... Do You think one egg is representative? From one egg I neither can't conclude to Your flock (neither of the heredity of the other hens nor of the rooster) nor to the country population. I have shown our day production of the Scottish Welsumer (and some relicts of my german strain with over 100 gram) - which show a nice homogenity within the flock.

My barnevelder eggs are a similar color and shape. I've always had round barnevelder eggs, so I do believe it is a trait of the breed. Some eggs I have to candle to see where the air sac is.

I think it's a pretty color, but, of course, they aren't all that dark and some are speckled which I like too. Maybe it's wrong, but I like a little diversity.

Thats good color on our Barnie eggs and your marans eggs. Nice job Donna.

I would like to see Redcaps Barnevelder Eggs and Piets as well. Do you guys have any pictures of your Barnie eggs?

Andy

Andy, I don't get overly exited about eggs, they all look the same to me, but if it makes you happy.
Sorry I cannot show a full basket, this is from the incubator and todays catch, everything freezes and cracks within hours. It sucks being where I am and I miss Holland a lot.
My Welsummers are on strike(10 hens, no eggs!), I can tell you they only lay a bit darker and have speckles most the time. I refuse to outcross to a real dark egger, like some hatchery stock out there. I will levae it up to you guys to re-invent the wheel. Piet
There are some wyandotte eggs (I think 5 or 6) and leghorns too)

Aren't eggs or meat, the main thing to get excited about with chickens

Otherwise they are just pretty pets. However, they are not as loving as a cat or loyal and protective as dog.

Edited "only" to "main"
