I haven't been on here much lately. But, I wanted to share a spring picture of a broody hen and chicks




It's been a busy breeding season for me already. 100+ chicks hatched so far, 46 eggs in the bator and one more hatch planned for May. Then I will probably put my bator away until fall.

9 of 17 barnevelders are out right now. Wellies just started pipping.

I culled heavily in both flocks and cannot wait to see what this year brings.

Thanks She is proving to be a very good broody and very active at foraging for her chicks. She takes them all over the place. It's amazing to see how much ground those little fluff balls can cover.

Well, I am getting ready to switch gears for summer. I might quit shipping eggs earlier than I planned. I want to concentrate on raising up my young stock and have already started thinning down my hens. I still have 24 hens ( 2 are broody with one sitting, one raising chicks ). But I need some more room for grow outs. I want to get down to around 15 hens which is less than half of what I had in January. If anyone still wants eggs let me know ASAP. Trisha

Here are some of my latest Barnevelder chicks! There is one lonely silkie on the right hand side but so far I have 13 Barnevelders out of the shell and doing great. Love the little stripes! Out of the 13 I have 12 males...anybody need some boy chickies? lol

Just curious, how do you sex them this early? I have 5 eggs due to hatch tomorrow and I would love to be able to sex them right away. Thanks so much for any input and Happy Easter!

Not all lines are auto sexing at day old, from my understanding, but the line I have (from TLS Ranch) is very accurate this way. Once they are dried off and all fluffed up look at the chest of the chick. If it is bright yellow/white then it is a male. If the chest fluff is muddy colored or brownish/grayish it is female. Once in a while I will get one that is hard to tell, perhaps it is yellowish with a large brown splotch in the middle of it. I count those as male until I know different. I had two from this last hatch like that. I did have some blue double laced Barnevelder eggs in this batch and I was not able to separate them for the hatch and I don't know how accurate the down color test is on that line, so it is possible that the yellow-with-brown-patch chested chicks are my blues.

I'll see if I can find a couple of pictures to show you what I mean...I take plenty of chick pictures, lol...I should have a couple that show the difference!

This picture the chick is a bit sideways but you can clearly see how yellow his chest is...BOY

In the next picture I will show a girl from about the same angle (hard to get them to stand still!)



You can clearly see in this picture the brownish chest fluff. There is a small yellow spot but this is definitely a girl.

Like " Diamonddust" said, it's not 100%. You can get chicks that look in between.

Perfect! Thank you both so much for taking the time to post the pics. especially on Easter. We have 1 pipped so far and some scratching/pecking from inside 3 more, but these were shipped eggs so I'm not going to count my chicks before they're hatched.

If all goes okay I may post some pics once they are out. Thanks again!

I know the first one is a girl, but I can't figure out the other two. These are out if TLS birds.
