Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Depending on the line, chicks can be sexed by chick down color at a day old. Otherwise, it's usually obvious at 8-12 weeks old. They do tend to be slow growing and probably won't get as big as your Marans either.

Does BLR stand for blue laced red? Blue or black shouldn't matter, but it is a characteristic that has to be selected for. Like I said, it depends on the line. If they have the gene, females will have brown or gray breasts. Males will have white or yellow chests. Like anything, it isn't 100%. I have a couple I thought were cockerels that I now suspect are pullets. I'll still use them for breeding, at least this year, because I desperately need more pullets.
Here are some pics of 3 of the Blue Laced Red chicks. I don't see any difference in down color on the chest. The remaining also look the same. Please feel free to comment:

Chick#1 with purple band

Chick#2 with red band:

Chick#3 with yellow band

Based in the chest color, they all look like cockerels. However, I had a hatch with 6 chicks and I thought all but one were cockerels. Now I think one is a cockerel and the rest are pullets. LOL

I would guess 2 cockerels at first look too. Just wait another 2 weeks and you should start seeing more differences like feathering rate and maybe even comb development. Trisha

@bonnylass79 you are scaring me because all 5 are the same and only 1 of the 5 has some shoulder feathers growing. Hopefully that's not the reason they were sold

@Happy Chooks any comments?

I have a group of BBS double laced barnevelders. I will have to check their chest to see if I can tell the sex. Are the females quicker to feather out. I have a few that are getting nice shoulder feathers and the rest nothing.

Quote: I can sex mine by 4-5 weeks. They do feather in slow - cockerels have short stubby wing feathers while pullets get longer wing feathers.

Just thought I would share a picture of one of my favorite pullets from this years hatches.

I have 22 adult Barnevelder hens and about 40 youngsters left from picking through all the chicks I've hatched this year. Cockerels are looking very nice this year. I just built a small bachelor coop, so I can keep an extra male or two this year.

She's beautiful!

Quote: I agree with Trisha, looks like 2 cockerels and a pullet, but another couple weeks to be sure.

Females will get longer wing feathers and males will keep shorter, stubby wing feathers. And yes, females will feather in much quicker than the males.

I sorted through my cockerels and picked 15 to grow out longer. I have 3 of the oldest ones that look nearly identical. This one has the best comb. This guy is about 16 weeks old. Nice and wide too:) the picture is a bit faded, the best I can do with my phone not having a camera yet. His legs are much more yellow than it looks in the picture.

My neighbors are going to hate me. Most of the 15 are crowing or starting to crow.

I have a 12 week old Pullet I hatched from a barnyard mix. I believe the mom to be a Welsummer and the dad to be a Barnevelder. What's your opinion, does it look a Barnwelly? LOL

Looks like a mix of well and barnie to me too. Pretty bird:) My Sis hatches Barnevelder mixes all the time. She has a mixed flock. The prettiest crosses were usually Barnevelder crossed with Easter egger, Welsummer, or australorp . Nice layers too.
