I was planning to line breed the vB line I got from C. Ledford , but got two nice vB/Johans roos and I'm going to try them. They have a few things that I want to add like bright yellow legs. I hope to have 3 distinct lines soon: Pure barnies (vB/Johan), Blues, and the ones with cornish. I'll have to figure out a name for the ones with cornish in them after I get them to standard.

What are the differences in type between Barnevelders and your project Cornevelders? Are you trying to develop them as a breed?

I think there was someone elst that was going to breed the cornevelders as new breed and keep more of the cornish look, but I haven't heard much about it or if they kept the project going. I just wanted to add some better carcass quality and vigor back to the barnevelder. The pure barnevelders I've had don't dress out like they should being "dual purpose" breed. The darker eggs was a total suprise.

Right now my project cornevelders look pretty much like Barnevelders. They still need higher tail sets and fuller, fan like tails. But they have heavier, meatier bodies, are slightly bigger, and lay very well. I can't wait to see what kind of eggs I get from the F3's. I should have F4's by this fall and then I think I'll keep a closed line. Hopefully I'll get a nice cockerel and I'll breed him back to his mother, best of his aunts and possibly grandmother. The back crossing and line breeding should help to keep the dark eggs.

DD and I are looking forward to watching your Cornvelder project,..and the blues too!!

We decided against breeding the "SQ Barnevelder" hens that you graded for us,. they look more like Wellsummers everyday and should make good layers but that's it. I wish that "Breeder had been honest about her flock,. so much time spent on eggs and raising birds,.. but ,. lesson learned,..

anyway

So now we are back to all v/B birds,. and will cross the roo to his sisters while awaiting Johan eggs.

Wait, wait , wait, wait, wait,

Good luck! If you are going to cross lines I think the Johan and vB line cross pretty well and really like the two roos I have from that cross. If you breed the vB roo to his sisters then keep his best daughters to breed back to him. I was told that with sibling breeding you should only do the brother/sister cross once then breed the roo back to the best daughters OR keep the best cockerel and breed back to the mothers.

Awesome!
I think you got KC/vB and did you get some vB as well? The eggs were marked vB if they were from the pure vB pen.
I'm so glad you got a good hatch and they are soooooo incredibly cute.
I have a pair I hatched a week ago and more in the incubator

do you have any more pics of the Cornvelders?

I am not a breeder but own two Barnevelder bantams double laced, sometimes I put some eggs in the bator but just for expanding my on flock or to give some pullets to my friend. No idea what the breeding line from my chicks but I am going to follow this thread. I could post some pics for those who want to.

Barnevelder bantams are REALLY hard to find. A friend of mine had a pair & her little cockerel got sick and died. I wish I knew where to get some. Where did you get yours?

ETA: Nevermind, I just saw that you're in the Netherlands. Maybe they're easier to get where you are.

Yes it's easier overhere although not many people breed the bantam version. If it wasn't that difficult with shipping eggs then it would be worth a try, but as for as I know it's almost impossible to get eggs in to the US.

Hello all. Thank you for this informative thread and all of the eye candy. I am a complete newbie - presently chickenless - and I'll be incubating my first set of eggs at the end of March/beginning of April. I'm trying out different breeds to see which are the best fit for my situation, so I have ordered a half dozen each of Speckled Sussex, Easter Egger, and Welsummer. However, I am sort of in love with the Barnevelder and have decided to have a small breeding flock of them as well. I realize that "show quality" hatching eggs are very expensive and felt that it was not appropriate for me to begin with such valuable eggs.

I don't know the technical terms, but I like the Barnevelders with strongly contrasting black and copper, wider bands as opposed to many thin bands. I finally decided and just ordered 10+ hatching eggs from hriscay254 on Ebay. I think the pictured birds are beautiful and healthy-looking. He is out of Waco, Texas and says his birds are "From the Johan and C Ledford bloodlines they are in separate pins and each egg will be marked." Has anyone ordered Barnevelder hatching eggs from him before? Are these birds pet quality, show quality, or something in between? (FYI - I'm new here, so if my question is inappropriate, please forgive me and disregard.)

At the moment, I am very excited. I cannot wait for all of my eggs to arrive!
