Disclamer: signs may vary and nothing's 100% until you get an egg or it crows....

As day-olds: dark breast= girl, light= boy
Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy

At around 2 weeks:
Pullet= longer wings almost to tail or past, back feathers starting to come in, longer tail feathers, thin legs.
Roo= short stubby wings, almost no tail, very few back feathers, thicker legs. Maybe already some comb development showing (if you look closely)
Pullet, Roo

At 4+ weeks:
Roos= upright stance, larger thicker body and legs, color/size showing on comb/wattles, less feathering overall (back, wings, tail, breast)

Pullets= almost feathered, longer slender body/legs, no comb or wattles.

After 6 weeks there should pretty much be no guessing. Only the "odd balls" will be able to fool you.

P.S ignore the EE chicks in the background of the pics... they are my sister's EEs that I'm raising for her. They are not from my Barnevelders:)

for you and Tammy! I have 17 eggs under one broody on day 13. I very quickly candled and all show good development. I also just put 14 more eggs under my other hen that went broody. I'm not going to be shipping any more eggs until fall, because I have several "project" pullets starting to lay. It's getting too hard to figure out who laid which eggs. We're in the process of building a new run and splitting my coop in to two coops. That way I can divide up the lines. But, DH is busy with his job and probably won't finish dividing the coop until after the summer is over.

Trisha

Edited to add here's a pic of broody #2 She's an F1 blue hen. She's sitting on 14 and her sister is sitting on the other 17 eggs.

Very nice, Thanks Trisha!
(trying to apply this to Partridge Chanticlers that came with my AMs....hoping I have 3 girls/2 boys, not the reverse...no Barnie chicks for me til August

Re: shipping eggs fertility....My low hatch rates are related to rough handling, scrambled yolks and disrupted aircells. I opened all the eggs I had shipped in at end of hatch time and that's what I found of those still in the brooder.

No, none were Johan eggs. Can you find a Barnie breeder nearer to you or just get chicks shipped in? Rockinpaints (fancychick) has nice Barnies in Ohio.....

I'm finally getting Barnie eggs. They are coming from Royce here in WA. She has nice show quality birds that have done very well in the shows. I should get them tomorrow as they were shipped today. I have a client/friend big into chickens that will hatch them for me & we will split the chicks later. I only want 2 hens as my coop is close to the neighbors & hens are noisy enough, although I would really love to breed but maybe later in a few yrs when we move. I'm so excited to have the breed & coloration I want running around my back yard.

Shannon, look into keeping a rooster or two at your friends or outside of town so you can use them to get fertile eggs to hatch and breed up your flock. I've been reading online here at BYC and their are suggestions for ways to keep roosters on your property or a friends so you can do this!

You could even take a couple hens that are laying out TO the rooster and keep them there for a week or so and get fertile eggs for hatching.

Gotta get these barnies increasing in numbers!

Tailfeathers looks to have nice Barnies! We will want pictures.
