Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Mine just started laying yesterday and they are 26.5 weeks old... had a long wait. My barnie eggs in the bator are nearing the end of day 20, I hear the occasional peep and I see one egg that has pipped and started zipping.... This is the part I hate, rushing to the bator every few minutes to see no progress. People with experience with barnie eggs, do they tend to be slow hatchers ? or are they on the quicker side ? I have had eggs (not barnevelder) that pipped and were out running around the incubator 30 min later, and I have had eggs that pip and sit there for hours before doing anything.

Well...the results are in. I have 3 barnevelder chicks. The fourth one tried to hatch....it zipped 1/3 of the way and then died in the egg...disappointing. It looks like I have 2 boys and a girl (very thankful for the girl that was last to hatch and came on day 23). Now, if they'll just stay alive for me, next year I can hatch some of my own!

Good news re starter stock. Still sorry you only got 3. But it's a start!
PICS!!!!! please.

I will get some pics this weekend. My wife has the camera and is out of town.

The eggs that I ordered from Christina Ledford came in today. So far, not so good. She wanted to know when they arrived and the condition. I will tell you what happened and what I emailed her...

Hi Christina,

Well I have good news, bad news, and possibly worse news...

Good news first--- The eggs arrived today

The bad news--- They WERE delivered to my house, 1 was broken.

Possibly worse news---They were left on my very sunny, concrete, porch steps. FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS!( i was gone but my hubby got home @ 2:30 and found them)
GRRRR!
I called the post office and said "my name is Jen and I am expecting eggs in the mail that are to be picked up at the post office"
They said" oh yes, but they haven't arrived yet"
I said, "Oh yes they have. They were left on my step"
She proceeded to ask me about the box, if it had "eggs" on it...

I wasn't home when I was talking to her and my hubby couldn't remember about the box, but It did had "fragile perishable", but not "eggs". So, I have to call them back tomorrow and let them in on the rest of the story. I wonder what they are suppose to do if it says "perishable"?
Well, I'm not getting off to a very good start.
I just wanted to tell you since you asked me to let you know.
Thanks
Jen

Man, only me, right?!! Anyone got advice? Comments? Feel free to tell me.
Thanks

I would put them straight into the bator asap and not turn for at least 2 days. If they weren't "cooked" they could of started to develop. It also can take a while for the temp in the egg to rise so I'm hoping they didn't get too hot. If you let them "rest" they may stop developing. But, make sure they haven't cooled down or gotten too cold then you would need to warm them up slowly or they could sweat if placed directly in a hot bator.

they do ok.

I had to share some pics I took today of my broody hen. She's doing great with the 16 chicks she hatched out. I've let her out to free range a few times, but the T-storms have been horrible so I've mostly kept them in my big brooder outside.
I have a feeling she's going to be "outgrown" pretty soon. Look at all the little ones stuffing themselves under her, LOL.

The prefered spot... a nice soft pillow to sit on.

Its still too wet to take a guess at the breast coloring, it hatched looking kinda white, but has darkened up a bit in the past few minutes. I think it might be one of those oddball keep you guessing ones. I have heard peeping from the other eggs and seen rocking but so far best I can tell from my vantage point of two little clear windows no pips yet.

Trisha your blue broody is too cute

If you keep posting pictures I am going to have to either order eggs or start my own project.
