I got my little new hatched chicks last night, hatched June 7th morning. They were cool & sleepy so I didn't get a good picture. I have 2 really white chests & 2 grey chests, white chests seem to have darker backs almost black where as the grey chests have a lighter brown backs. So assuming 2 girls & 2 roos? No V's so I know Royce has good quality birds, already knew that as that is why I got eggs from him

Here's the picture but camera phone isn't that good without real good lighting. So I put the chicks under my broodie. She does gently peck at them when infront of her but it doesn't seem mean. I tucked them under & this morning they were still under there. I pulled one out to see if it wanted to eat but it didn't. Broodie lifted up a little & I pushed the chick back under. I hope Broodie knows when to let them come out to eat & drink? This is Broodie's first time going broody as she's not quite a yr old. I have her blocked off into her own nest & the old roost area has the food & water.

Almost lost the chicks. The lip to the nest box was too high for them to get back in with Broodie, one was near dead. Almost stiff & ice cold. Got them in the house & under a light. They all warmed up & acting normal again. I didn't even think about the nest box issue. So they are in the house for the next few weeks.

So I got a tiny bit better picture. From the 3 you can see, 4th one is a grey chest. What do I have? I'm thinking 2 & 2. The chick my daughter is holding has very black strippings where as everyone else is more a brown stripping. As you can see it even is darker in the face then the others, almost looks like a black breard.

Has anyone found Barnies to be more heat tolerant? It is 100 today and the plymoth and 3 buffs are panting but not a single Barnie is. I put frozen bottles of water out for everyone but only the buffs are getting near it.

Also hubby walled off the nest area so no chicks could get stuck, they have the roost floor which is pretty big. We put the chicks back with my broody hen. She is totally taking good care of them. She's showing them where the food is, even breaking it up for them. Teaching them to search for food. Showed them where the water was. Tries to protect them when I or my daughter holds one, I have to put my hand up so she doesn't peck us & she backs off. She tucks them in when they are cold. Its soo cool to watch.

Thank you. I just wanted someone to confirm what I thought. A few pictures others have posted I couldn't tell but my chicks seem to be so clearly marked. Now I need to figure out how to band them, atleast boys so I know who is who before they feather out. My friend who hatched for me will buy the roos to add to her flock of mixes if I can't sell them for breeding. I'm sure my close neighbor won't be happy when they start crowing.

Keep in mind the lines, Charlie had a white chest (hence the name) but at 3 months we love our hen

so chest color is not always 100 accurate

I got these from Tailfeatherz aka Royce. He doesn't worry about knowing the gender till later as he's more interested in making sure color & markings are perfect. So when I told him about the color of the chest he didn't know that. I will be super happy if its wrong the good way, more hens are better for me. I only have space for 2 relisticly so I will be selling 2 once I know forsure. Although my other neighbor across from us which we are super good friends with says if they start crowing in the summer time give them a chance & see if our closers neighbor can handle it lol. Their bedroom window is only about 30feet from the coop. We'll see. I will some how mark the 2 white chests & see how it turns out.
