Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

So pretty Happy Cooks

I got my 5 barnevelder chicks this weekend and am thrilled. They are 5 weeks old and we are pretty sure they are girls. (to go with the boy we already have) fingers are crossed.

They are in quarantine currently and will be for some time. They are a whole lot younger than my other chicks and I want to make sure they don't get picked on when I finally put them out.

The people I got them from seemed very nice they freeranged their flock except for the ones they were getting breeding eggs from, that were in a separate run and had a LGD guard dog with their flock and didn't even put them away for the night!!! I freerange but I am so paranoid about getting that coop door closed every night that it has me thinking. My dogs have so far been really really good with the chickens, but I have heard stories about the trusted dog becoming a chicken killer.
I have Giant Schnauzers that are really good with the chickens. They will wait for the chickens to lay and egg and then eat it, I don't yell at them for that. I figure if the chickens keep pooping treats the dogs are less likely to turn on them. I still coop my freerangers at night though because that dogs are not always in that part of the yard and I went rounds with a bobcat one year and lost alot of birds, but they do keep the dogs and coyotes out.

Finally some pics! These guys are hard to get good ones, so I apologize for the quality. This are my Trisha babies. I say 100% that I have 2 boys and 6 girls, however, I only got pics of 1 boy and 1 girl. They are 10 weeks old

I have one that has been sitting for a few weeks - I take the eggs and she still sits. I move her and she goes back or picks a new place. Very fussy but not mean when I take the eggs. I hope she gives up soon!

Has anyone else had some extremely broody hens??? This breed seems to love to set!
So far only one of my pure Barnie hens has wanted to really set this year. She hatched 8 chicks and later I got her to adopt 8 more day-old chicks. She's now raising all 16 chicks, but mainly caring more for the little ones as the older ones are pretty independent.

I also have one pure hen that has decided to skip the sitting part and go right to raising babies, LOL. She's trying to "adopt" some much older chicks and is in full "mommy mode". No interest in eggs, just babies.

It's funny because the "chicks" that she's trying so hard to "mother" are around 10 weeks old and even their own mother has given up caring for them.

My blues and project birds (with a little dark cornish in them) have been very broody this year too. A few other pure hens seemed to think about going broody, but gave up without stopping laying.
