Thanks again for all the eggs! I will take the chicks out this afternoon and leave the eggs another day or two just in case!

Just wondered, my "ee" chicks have black legs and feet. Are they still ee? They came out of blue shells!

Okay, this is what I have to report..those shells were super hard for the poor babies. Out of 7 cochin eggs....I had three that fully developed.

1 was clear

3 were fertile but I think post office killed, no development

1 - The one that had been rocking for 2 days finally hatched last nite
1, the one that had air cell on wrong side..I tried to manually pip this morning for him, but wasnt able to turn him in time, he died with me giving him mouth to beak, he was SO pretty too, blue with a big white chest, fully developed and perfect, but I was trying to be TOO carefull with the membrane and he suffocated before I could turn him. No way he would have got out, was turned totally the wrong way, and no air on that end.

The last one, just now, I was worried about, I held up to my ear and was oh so weakly tapping the shell, I manually pipped the shell for him, I am prety sure he wouldnt have been able to break his shell, but he is fully developed and breathing in the bator/hatcher still. I think he will make it, but I guess that egg was too tuff for him, but perhaps my humidity wasnt high enuff? I was running 67% the last 4 days.

But I got two very pretty fluffbutts, and almost had another.

Thanks Barnyard for giving me the opportunity to test your eggs!

I have noticed with the Cochin eggs that they are super hard. What do I do about that, or is it just the way there eggs are?

I am so sorry you lost the one chick, but in the same since you did save another. 67% is perfect humidity. I think you did everything right. The PO sure can do some damage. I wish you would have gotten more than 2 though.

I really dont know about the shells being so hard. I have had the temps just perfect, the shells being that hard I would think would be a HEALTHY thing for your hens, and I am sure if one went broody, they could hatch them out.

Actually there were only I think 3 that I could even come close to candling, the one lil guy I KNEW to watch for, I think I opened him a lil early, as he still had some yolk and thats why I was being so cautious handling him, if I could have hurried and found his head and turned it out of the membrane quick I might. The way it was, it took about 45 seconds and it was just too long!

I was heartbroken as he took two breaths while stuck in that membrane and then he was gone. I was hoping since the other two had absorbed their yolk he would be ready too, he just wasnt, he was a tiny runt of a guy, but oh so pretty.

The two I have now, well the one that I helped is still weak, but he is still ok so far, the other one is crawling all over and looking mad at the world. lol I probably wont be able to get pics til late tomorrow!

Dont feel bad, I am happy I have two! I think shipping must have been rough for the one egg to have gotten broken, so really thats pretty good!
