I'm sorry.. I have hesitated to post on this thread, cause I really don't know what's goin on with that color pattern! I was curious.. but couldn't really add anything to the mix... till now.
Here is a pic of a Barnevelder pullet from my pair..
I have another one outside that was given to me as a roo, but I'm having serious doubts on it's gender at this point.. I will try to get a pic. The lacing on the one outside is not as nice as that chick above.
I hatched several Barnevelders, but didn't raise them to maturity.. and the pair I had was exceptional and threw beautiful babiez.. Now I really miss them!
No, I'm glad you posted because it's a reference point. Thank you. What gorgeous lacing! I'd love to see your other one too.
Fortunately, all is not lost because I'm going to get REAL Barnevelder eggs from Tailfeathers next year.
And I really do think she's pretty as is. But part of me is a little mad too. When you consider the cost of the eggs and the fact that only one hatched--well, that's one expensive chicken. And THEN she's not even the breed I spent all that money for???
On the other hand, it's really my fault for not doing my homework.
Zoomia, dont beat yourself so hard on that. All of us go thru it a time or two and have to take two steps back. Happens to me too!
If it is not appropriate, how did that barring get into the picture? Was it a throwback?
I thought it was a genetic flaw at best. Sorry I am very weak in the Barnvelder section...it shows because I am not simply interested in the breed itself.
Glad you are getting some eggs from Tailfeathers, he sure got some beauties in there!
Yeah, so eager to get started! And I'd wanted barnevelders specifically for at least a year before that so ...
I am really weak on chicken genetics. Well, any genetics really. I've been learning a lot about blue chicken genetics because I have four blue birchen marans, but don't really have a grasp on the lacing/barring thing at all. So if someone with more knowledge were to chime in, I for one would be very interested!
Zoomia, did you know that there is a Barnie group on Yahoo and also a darkegglayer group? Both have folks on them that are extremely helpful. I have four Barnies that were born the spring from three different breeders (poor hatches were my fault and Mr. Murphy, not the breeders. They were great). If you posted your pics there too you might glean some interesting info. I don't know a thing about why your Barnie looks the way she does. I am just too new at them. Sorry!
As I said earlier the autosomal lacing is what you would expect and is absolutely normal. Patterns such as Partridge as in Wyandottes,Plymouth Rock only have the Parrern gene Pg, Double laced as in Barnevelders, Dark Cornish have the same Pg + a melaniser Ml, single laced such as Wyandottes,Sebrights have PG + Ml plus Columbian, autosomal pencilled as in Hamburgs,Campine have Pg and Dark Brown Db, spangled as in Hamburgs have Pg Ml and Db.
They all look the same in the juvenile feathering stage.

I am not a geneticist but I am a Barnevelder owner and have juvenile Barnies. I can assure you that they do NOT all look the same in the juvenile feathering stage.
ZZs, can you tell us where you got your Barnies from?
