Barred Rock / Dominiques Controversy (Rant)

As a new fan of keeping chickens, I appreciated your outlined points differentiating the Dominiques and the Barred Rocks. Would you do the same type of outline distinguishing the Ameraucanas from the "Easter Egger"? I'll admit I don't know, but I'd like to learn. Thanks! ~G

Interesting seeing the differences between the two. I ordered a Plymouth Rock from MPC and she is now six weeks old. I took for granted that her black legs went along with her black/white barring, but according to this she should have yellow legs? She has a single comb though, so that fits with the BR.

They don't they have yellow legs. They are Cuckoo which is sort of an off set barred not mottled. Their colour distributioin is basicly the same as a Barred Rock. For both the males are light, the females are dark.

OH Yes I know how that is!!!! I've had to explain the difference so many times. It's like what Krys told me one time, some people couldn't recognize the type of a breed if it kick them in the teeth. They see the Barred pattern and most call them "domineckers" and it'd not just the ol timers. I've heard Barred Rocks called Dominiques and vise versa, some have even told me they're the same breed, just different combs . I've even heard Barred Rock Cochins. As well as others. So frustrating but most people just don't know any better.

HEChicken, yours probably is a Barred Rock, it's just that hatchery birds do not always conform to the breed standard, I've seen some with dark legs and some with white legs.

Here's some pics

This is a Barred Rock rooster that is molting so his tail feathers haven't grown back in yet.

This is a Dominigue rooster from bobsbiddies here on BYC, ( he has had the spike leader on his comb dubbed but otherwise he is a great type roo.)

I also disagree with the molting in Doms. I don't think good quality Doms. have a mottleing effect.

Sorry I ment Dominiques have white legs. Its funny how even i got it wrong, and im ranting about it. haha.

I appreciate your rant. I've learned something. I bought hens that were Barred Rocks late one evening, only to realize in the bright sunshine that they have white legs and their barring is different from my barred rocks. I'll betcha five bucks that I have some BR/Dom crossed hens.

My BRs have a crisp barring that's more of a cool gray color whereas these other hens have more of a blurred barring (not as much as my cuckoo maran, though) that is a little "warmer" colored.

They don't have rosecombs, though.
