1st time backyard chickening here. My Barred Rock layed her 1st eggs today, yes eggs. I keep 2 coops one for the little ones but they moved to the big cage now. My BR was put in there for a few days as she was eating my RIR wattles but I put her back with the others 2 days ago. When I let them out of the main coop today the hutch was torn apart and she ran to the other coop. It was not set up for the nesting box so I ran to get hay. When I got back she had already laid 2 eggs but she was eating them. They had a very soft shell.
Is this normal for 1st eggs? Is she lacking something? Will she always eat her eggs?

What are you feeding your pullets?
Do you provide oyster shell free choice?

Since both were soft-shell eggs, she likely had both come into the shell gland at the same time. While not unusual for a new layer to have a soft shell egg the first go round, it would be a very good idea to minimize drama and stress. Sounds like she's been under some stress.

Soft shell eggs, a lot of times pullets/hens will eat those, but I would discourage it. Get your nesting boxes or nesting sights set up, put some ceramic eggs or golf balls in there, if they do happen to peck at those, they will learn they can't be broken.

First eggs can be a bit wonky but usually things get better once the bird's laying mechanism gets in gear.

If you aren't already providing it, set out some oyster shell in a separate container from the feed.

Some good ideas from @Wyorp Rock on the egg eating.
