Barred rock or ?

I was given a 4 month old rooster, Sam. The lady said that he is a barred rock. I have seen several pictures of this breed, but I haven't seen a picture of one that looks like Sam. He looks like a barred rock but he has brown and gold feathers mixed in with his black and white feathers. He also has green feathers in his tail. Tonight, I saw a picture of a sex-link that looked almost like Sam. I am new to having chickens so I need some help in determining the breed. This is a picture of Sam, but it doesn't really show his colors. I will try to get a better picture if it will help. What breed do you think he is?

I think he is a Sex-Link rooster. Not a Barred Rock, for sure.

agreed...he is a male black-sex link. Very very handsome...I saw a picture of one when I first got chickens and have wanted one ever since...now I have one but he is still only 2 months old.

I now have 11 chickens, which includes 4 roosters and 7 hens. Sam is about 6 months old now and is the dominant rooster. He wants to be mean, but I don't back down so he has almost completely given up on trying to attack me. He doesn't try to attack my son because one time he tried and my son grabbed him around the neck and pushed him to the ground to show his dominance over the rooster. I started to doubt he was a barred rock when we bought 2 barred rock roosters and 6 hens. The new roosters are black and white with no other colors mixed in. What happens if he breeds with a barred rock hen? Will the chicks be barred rocks or sex-links?

I had a BSL roo and hatched a roo that looked like that from the BSL roo. Not a BR. She may have thought that she had a BR roo but he was really a sex link. You will get the red leakage in the chicks.


If you breed him to BR hens, you might get some red leakage in the chicks and he may only carry one copy of the barring gene and he will not pass the barring to 100% but 50% he will not breed true.
