Hello,

I have a dozen barred rock pullets(?) I have noticed that some of them, most of them are getting pretty red in the combs and wattles. They aren't a whole lot different in size, color, or size of wattles or combs, just redder. They are nearly nine weeks old, but I didn't know if the redder comb and wattles might mean roo? This picture shows one of the ones in question, on the far right front. The others are in the huddle behind it. This was taken when it was really cold out, so they were huddled for warmth(don't know why they wouldn't get in the coop, out of the wind

). I would appreciate opinions, and to see pictures of barred rocks around this age, for comparison. Also, don't know if it matters, but all these chicks(there were 26, others went to my mom's) were fully feathered before they were six weeks old.
Thanks,
Carrie

If they are all dark like that, they're all pullets. Here is a cockerel about 12 weeks old, see the huge comb and much lighter color? Unless you have a super dark cockerel, which isn't very common, they're early maturing ladies.

I'm seeing hens tool
Wouldn't the roosters be whiter looking?? Is that true in Barred Rocks?

ETA: looks like my question was answered as I typed it!! lol

Thanks everybody, I feel much better now, especially seeing that 12 week old roo(so pretty!). All the girls are all dark, maybe I will get really lucky and they will start laying early, too?

I can always hope!

Thanks again,
Carrie

My BRs never seem to lay before about 19 weeks, but most are just after 20-22 weeks. I have a less-than-six-week-old BR pullet in my grow out coop and she even has a bit of pink at the base of her comb, but her legs are dark on the fronts and her color is very black with fine white bars so I'm positive it's a pullet. Let us know when you get some eggs!

Will do, if mine follow the trend you have noticed, I should be getting eggs in June!

Thanks again,
Carrie
