Barred Rock the meanest breed?

I have to say that my BR's are great girls. They boss my BO gals around, but hey, that is the way it goes. Like Speckledhen said there is a pecking order, and as long as everyone has enough space, and food then life is good. Even is the roo gave you a little trouble, I would not blame the breed. He may have been messed with, and it is his job to protect his girls. I would give him another chance. If it happens again on a regular basis, then you can re-think the situation with him. My BR's love attention, and are easy keepers.

I had a Welsumer rooster who was so handsome, but when he came into his own, he attacked me without provocation often when I went in to gather eggs or pick up one of the hens who enjoys me carrying them around. I finally gave him to a friend who took him home and had him for their Sunday dinner. I feel life is too short to deal with an overly aggressive rooster. At the poultry auction in a small town near us, there are tons of aggressive roosters people will buy for a couple bucks, and take them home and eat them. Guess that is just a part of having chickens/roosters. Life is too short to live with a nasty rooster!

What I heard to do and have tried is this. But get ready, it's WWF with the chicken pen as your ring. It's a dominant thing. You're threatening his territory. I was told to wrestle him down, hold him to the ground for a few minutes and let him loose. Of course, he'll be embarrased in front of his girls. This isn't an easy thing to do, but I have done it a couple of times. Usually, mine will start acting this way, just challenging me at first, so I would go prepared, boots on and clothes and really get mad. When he does it (after I'm dressed for combat) after him I go. He stops. He'll start it again sometime, but it might be awhile. I really watch when my 2 year old granddaughter is out there with me. Oh yeah, while you have him down, good time to cut his spurs. The attack is more scarry that hurtful.

My wife tried the same with ours to no avail. We didn't want to spend all summer looking over our shoulders so off to freezer camp he went.

Interesting.

I have 7 chickens.

2 are Barred Rocks.

They are MEAN.

I mean, they pick on me, the others and each other. Yes, they will fly up on my lap and such, but will also BITE me if they want (unprovoked). They are bullies. Yes they are both hens.

I got them as 2 day old chicks and they were hand raised, and loved and handled all the time.

They came from Mt. Helathy Hatchery.

I love them, but they need a good spanking sometimes

My BR are sweet as can be to me, but they pick at my little flock.

They also make the most ridiculous noises. It's like a nasal "Mwaaaaw, mwaaaw, mwaaaaw"

Hilarious. We named are BR roo Party Boy because of his antics and personality. I just thought it funny when the original poster has the same user name.

I was gonna buy some Barred Rocks but I asked the seller about his barred rocks and if the roos was mean and he told me that thier barred rocks was very aggressive. Now I have had barred rock hens and they weren't particularly mean.

I have 2 BR pullets. They are only 16 weeks, but so far so good. They are a little aggressive towards each other, but are people friendly, although a bit skittish. It's fine by us as we don't expect them to be lap chickens. I didn't get mine from a hatchery. I bought them from a local breeder. They do make some funny noises though
