I'm not an expert, but your BR in question doesn't look like my 8-9 week old BR pullets, so I would guess rooster.

Tasymo - It sure does look like one now, but something wasn't quite right when it was a chick. Some of the BYCers were saying that the markings around the face weren't right. The Penn State guy seems to think not, but she matches all of the photos that I can find. As there were no other chickens on the property that looked like this, I'm trying to figure out how the guy had a single Australorp chick?

The BR seems to be a confirmed roo from many sources now. I thought they were supposed to be more flighty, but he's pretty personable.

I had a BR "hen" that turned into a rooster this spring. Your guy looks like that.

Black chickens (hens and roosters) will have the greenish iridescent sheen to their feathers. To me that looks like a Black Australorp. The body shape, leg color, and comb type are Australorp-ish. I think your USDA and your Penn State people are mistaken.

I agree...we'll just call her an Australorp and wait for someone to prove it wrong.

Perhaps, I'll just call her my little "Mystery Chick"! haha She's got the best personality of the bunch and has beautiful color to her...she looks so soft! Her name is Poulet (french)...we're trying to keep some form of "chicken" in each of the names. We also have Kip (dutch) the now-roo, Filet-mina, Sammie (Chicken Sandwich), Nugget, and Pollo (italian)! haha
