WOW! This thread really makes me want to give away my mixed layer flock and only raise BRs. I am planning on showing my silkies this year and my husband really likes the BR so I was thinking maybe if I only had them and they were "his" he would be more willing to go to the shows with me.

This may be a silly question but is the heratige type not the same as what is being shown? I have been looking trying to find an exhibition breeder but have only been finding bantams, no large fowl. I guess I will look into joining another breed club!

These posted are the Standard Breed Barred Rocks. These are the Real McCoys. The production type are not breed to the standard and if shown would not have a chance. Hope this helps you see the difference. There are a few Standard Barred Rocks in your region. Ohio and Illnois are. You can get eggs shipped to your home this spirng from the folks that have these birds posted. Glad you like them that is the purpose to promote this Rocks on this thread. bob

Thanks! That does help! I was wondering if there were multiple types. I an not a huge fan of the production type, but was not sure if heratige=exhibition. I know some breeds the heratige looking birds would not place well at a show (which to me makes no sence).

For example I breed morgans. The standard for Morgan horses was based on one horse, Justin morgan. The standard is still based off him, but everything that wins looks nothing like how the standard was written. So there are many different types within the breed and unfortunatly with Morgans what is always winning is nothing like the standard.

Now I have to decide who to get some from! If anyone has hatching eggs or birds for sale please PM me! Thanks!

I saw your hourse and I saw some Morgans in a sled pulling contest twenty years ago in Wisconsin. Strongest horses per pound I ever saw. You will be all right with Standard Barred Rocks next year send me your email address and I will send you a Plymouth Rock Newsletter for being interested in the breed. Bob

Hi everyone -
i live in hawaii and chickens here are pretty few and far between. it costs a lot of money to ship chicks all the way out here and most people sell red/black star and RIRs on craigslist. I was lucky to get 4 barred rock hens who will be laying soon:D they were ordered as chicks from im not sure what hachery. then my neighbor got 10 BR pullets and 8 turned out to be roo's so i was gifted 2 of them. the boys are still under a year and i hope that they will look like some of the beautiful bird pics that are posted on this thread! I will try to post some up of my little flock soon. so my ??? is when my babies are all laying and my roo's are doing their job can i hatch out my own eggs and get some more barred rocks or do they need to be crossed with some other breed?? im am a "NEW EGG" so i need some guidance! BYCs has been so helpful for me already. Mahalo to everyone! i love the barred rocks so much! my dad used to raise chickens when i was a little girl and the barred rocks were my favorite! i looked for a while for my 4 hens to start out my flock and then the barred rock roo's found me!! i am hoping to make some little barred rock chickies of my own! thanks again, aloha - BigIslandChicks
