Barred Rocks Good Shepard Poulty Ranch

Look at the pictures in this thread ... they are birds from Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch. You will see the difference.

As far as using yours for breeding .... breeding for what? What is your goal? Meat, eggs, conformity to the standard? It depends on what your breeding goal is.

Yourpicture of your barred rock rooster he is a classic Producton verison of the breed. He even looks like he has production white rock or rhode island white in him.
ow look at your male turkey. Do you see his style and flasheyness. That is a nice turkey true to the breed.

What I would do as many have decided to do is go with the barred rocks that are on this post out of Good Shepard Farms. I am. I have my name on the long list with Jermey. If you cross one of the Standard Breed birds with this male you are still introducing a non standard barred rock to your line. It would take you ten years to ever get anything like what Kathy and Jermey have.

You can still keep him as a pet. But I would not breed from him.

I hope you and others who come to this thread can see the difference between Standard Breed Poultry and Commerical Production poultry. There is a difference.

I appreciate the comments.
My goal is to bring back the size, our rocks up here are way to small compared to the "Standards"

What I keep hearing up here in my neck of the Woods, Alberta Canada. Is that the Barred Rocks are no where near what they should be in regards to Barring, Size when it comes to Roosters, same goes for the hens. I keep hearing that they are too small, same with the pullets that their barring is not correct and such according to the "Standards"..... remember I am very new to all of this. I would love to get my hands on some of the lines from Jeremy but chances are that will not be for a while yet.

I was under the impression that he was a purebred barred rock, as are his parents and so on. However this particular bird is more of a Mutant, showing recessive genes is he not?

Here is a pic of his brother, hatched the same day from the same parents, a little closer to some of the pics you all have posted but still way off, same age as Paleface, but half his weight.

Runt
Weight: 4.5lbs
Age: 33 weeks or 7.8 months

DSC07065.jpg

Poor Runt got fairly bad frostbite on his Comb and wattle, we hit -38ºC or -36.4 ºF for a few days straight and he decided to venture outside.

I got Runt and Paleface from the same place, and I saw the Parents, which looked more correct to what I have seen here, but yet not as Good Looking!

I am thinking that maybe, Paleface is just the Odd one out who is showing some recessive colorations.... <==== Did I get that correct.

Sooo Much to learn.

Just to add a bit more info.

My Barred Rocks Roosters stem from lines crossed with Stock from Rochester Hatchery as well the University of Alberta bloodlines.
My Hens are direct stock from the UofA. Not sure if that helps at all.

But now I am seeing the differences more so.....

On a side note I would like to continue this thread over hear, so I am no longer Hi-jacking this wonderful thread with my Mutant BR's LOL

I really appreciate the advice and suggestions.

Sorry for the Hi-jack!
