Barred Rocks Good Shepard Poulty Ranch

I think if you have a show type bird that is only lacking because of the number of points on the comb, it isn't really that important. I mean, if you have everything else but that .... I would sure be happy!

Hey Bob! Very glad to see you back round the forum!!!

I've got 5 eggs due to go into lockdown Sunday, from Jeremy. USPS lost em for 8 days, only 5 made is this far. Got 24 just went in from a reshipment (Thank You Jeremy for that!), they're due in a few weeks

I agree with Kathy. First you get the type right, then work on the comb.

Of course, but I wasn't talking about the number of points, but the uneven, pinched look to some of them.

I may be wrong, but honestly, I don't pay too much attention to the comb, except for looking for a split comb or a sprig, which are DQs, and looking for a thumbprint.

I have a few chicks from Ms Kathy and I have a few eggs in lockdown due sunday. I am very excited to have these birds. They are definitely different than any I have had so far in quality. The rate of feathering is nowhere as fast as the hatchery birds. But they are much bigger in body size at the same age as hatchery birds.

I just wondered if you noticed that on some of the show pics I've seen lately, but no matter. I do think a great BR per standard is real eye candy! I don't think you can get a better chicken than a Rock anyway. Add some serious lookers to that, and you have the perfect breed in my eyes.

The first thing a rookie chicken person wants to do is get a five point comb on there chickens. They kill all the birds with good color and type and keep the culls that have five point on thier comb then they wonder what happern . If a good type gravey bowl rock has four or seven points that is ok. You breed a four point good bird to a six or seven point bird to compensate thier weakness. The point cut for a extra point or lack of one is a half a point.. Judges dont worry that much for points on a comb unless they are eight or nice.. bob
