barred rocks, NEVER EVER AGAIN

Hi. I have a BR pullett, hand raised.Just a wonderful gal.I don't have any BR roos. However, just yesterday had to rehome my great EE roo. just 4 months old.A really wonderful little guy.If I could I would have another. City living is no place for a poor roo.

I think some roos are just not nice and others are sweetie pies. My Razzamatazz is great with the girls and horrid to my family.

I have 6 roos and the others are all sweet.

Luck of the draw more than a breed behavior I think

Any Rooster can be bad I don't care for RIR because I was terrified by a Roo when I was a teenager......he took care of his hens though and I just learned how to deal with it. So I can understand your feelings that said I love my Rocks they are excellent layers and make good eats too and I know more now about training my roos and still I have culled some because they just didn't get it quick enough for me and I had plenty more to choose from temperament is a trait I breed for too.

I dunno, I've never had BRs but my grandma raised them and said they were the loveliest birds. Any chicken can be mean. I have orpingtons and they're all sweet except for this one hen that will peck the heck out of you, breaking your skin. However I've worked with her a bit and she doesn't do it as much.

Hi, I spend as much time as I can handling all my chicks when they are small, so that they will be tame. I have never had barred rocks before, but I just brought home 13, 2 day old BR chicks yesterday. I also brought 12 Light Brahama babies. It will be interesting to see how they turn out temperament wise. So far my other breeds have turned out very docile and fun to be with. After reading this thread I will spend a bit of extra time handling this breed to hopefully end up with sweeties!

Just have to add my two cents. My BR's (pullets) are wonderful, gentle and friendly. my speckled partridge rock is a chatter box, friendly, a bit forceful but in a woman kind of way and my partridge rock she minds her own business. Prior to getting mine I had only heard good things about the females thats why I picked them. And actually all my 13 pullets are great, and my Roo is a good Roo (not a BR, he's a NHR)

We have all handled them from day one, give them daily attention, and also give them their space.
