Hi all, I’m very new to chickens (3 weeks new!). I thought I got six barred rock pullets from Tractor Supply...but now that their feathers are coming in, I am seeing some confusing differences. I have had one that is definitely barred rock that has been lighter than the others, but has darkish legs and feet. I’m wondering if she is a he. Now I’m noticing that two of the others have different coloring. I did a little research and am now thinking they may be cuckoo marans. (Which is kinda cool, just unexpected.)

I tried to take good photos. I really did. I read the guidelines. But I didn’t have much luck. If you have any opinions based on what you see, I’d love to hear your opinions. If not, I will try another day!

Thanks!

it is hard to sex at this age try throwing a hat or something in the brooder and the ones that run are hens and the ones that stay or approach the hat are roos but you cant bo 100% sure

Yellow legs = Barred Rock, while pink legs = Cuckoo Marans. So far, I'm only seeing BRs (those with legs visible :)).

In the last picture, I spy 3 definite cockerels: far left, middle, and far right. :D

I was worried someone would say that, but I agree. Definite red combs. So now the question is...if I get some new chicks, can I keep them with these, or will they need to be separated till older?

It's not fun agreeing on this subject...:hmm

It all depends on the individual birds. :) I've integrated chicks of different ages before with no issues, but that doesn't guarantee you wouldn't. I'd say be prepared beforehand to separate in case excessive picking ensues, and give it a go.

I am not going back to TSC for more chicks. I ordered some pullets from Meyer hatchery instead. Maybe my odds will be better. Now I just have to find a home or dinner table for my boys.
