Barred Rocks!!

yeah one of my neighbors lost two sheep to a pack of pit bulls. the sheep were shredded. i didn't even know that domestic dogs would go after livestock like that but our landlord swore it was dogs and not coyotes. and my own dogs killed my first hen and two stray sexlinks that i had rescued when they came into m yard all skinny and pitiful.

My neighbor has a habit of letting his dogs roam free, and although they're generally friendly, now that I have chickens I'm always worried they'll decide they want a fresh chicken dinner. I warned my neighbor that I will shoot to kill any dog that comes near my chickens. That was three months ago and his dogs, amazingly, have not left his property since then. Another neighbor baked me a cake in thanks for FINALLY getting those dogs under control. I guess I wasn't the only one irritated.

I think my Barred Rock ate all the bugs. All of them. In an acre.

I might need to buy bugs. Not a worm, not a caterpillar, not an earwig... All my bugs are gone! And she's got a plump, happy crop. LOL!

Seriously though. There's a bug farm near me. Might need to replenish my soil!

How much can a little chicken eat???!!!

yeah we have a neighbor with Border Collies who have already been guilty of chasing cows. and i've seen them in my yard. they probably would never make it to the coop though. my Alpha dog doesn't take kindly to strays in her territory. she is 12 years old and would still make dog food out of those border collies.

I'm so sorry for your loss! :(

I appreciate that. I didn't think I would get so attached but I was quite upset. I have 4 BR chicks (1-rooster, 3hens) that hatched in January and another 8 in the incubator but they will be May/June before I possibly get eggs. She was a very good, consistent layer

Hugs :(

I can't think about it or I get sick. Wild animal attacks I can understand because that's their food source and a risk we take but domestic dogs.... That's a person's fault. I have lost pets to a neighbor's dog and spent every last bit I had to build a fence on that side. It was horrible.

I wish you the best of luck with your barred babies!

Is it a part of the breed that made my rooster so very aggresive? I can't seem to get passed the fact that somehow I failed him. Nothing worked, not keeping him in his own pen, not a broom, throwing water at him did not work, I could not pick him up to carry him around because he would bite to draw blood. I tried a tennis racket, I tried the old you run at me and I'll kick you, I tried treats, I tried ignoring his behavior. Nothing worked. He learned a few days back that he could scale a fence to attack me. That was it. I called my spouse at work and told him he goes tonight. Are Barred rocks normally aggresive? Was it something I did or did not do? The worst part is I do miss seeing him in my yard, I don't miss being attacked, but I do miss seeing and hearing him. :(
