Barred Rocks!!

I guess it's good that he never produced chicks for me then. In the end all I needed to do to set him off was to walk by his pen, that was enough to make him wanna kill me. I think I'll avoid the barred rock breed when selecting my next rooster just in case. He was quoted as being a "gentle boy" when I bought him. O_0

I ust had to dispatch of my BR Rooster. He was so pretty and good to his girls. But everytime my 1 year old was alone he would get aggressive wih her. It started as bluff so i swatted him and assumed he would grow out of it. Then he finally got her,

I love my BR hens and may get more, but looking ar a Jersey Giant maybe for my next boy.

I was hoping mine would grow out of it also, the only difference was his attacks were NEVER bluffs. From his first attack to his last, he attacked to draw blood and no matter what, he would not stop
Attacking. Like he had something wrong with him. He was great with his girls, a tad rude when it came to mating, but otherwise he was good to them, he did often jump on them right in front of me which was bad. Crazy bird had a screw loose...he bit
My spouse right in the face once though..hard enough to draw blood. :(

Yes, he was good all winter (mostly) but spring plus hormones created a feathered monster. O_0
mine BR rooster is a monster usually anytime someone upsets his hens, his saving grace he is an awesome protector the Red usually just moves the girls,

My Barred Rock rooster chased my 4-yr old son the other day! My husband had to get between them with his lawnmower he was on. He said one more time and it's to the stew pot he goes! I am so bummed, because he is great to his ladies, can gather them with one crow. He is so protective, and hasn't ever been aggressive before. He is I think about 6 months old, so I guess his hormones are really starting to kick in. I really hope there isn't a next time, because I am already getting bullseyes on the yolks and I really wanted to breed him to my Buffs that will be laying in 5 months.

Are Barred Rock roos naturally more aggressive than other breeds? I hope not, because I have another who is a month old chick that I'm hoping to use for breeding too. I almost got a Brahma, but didn't want anything too heavy for my Easter Egger hens to have to support. Maybe I should have researched this a little more before selecting?

This is what my barr rock rooster did to my 1 year old. We were outside with her, i walked away to get something. The rooster ran to her and attacked (he was no where near when i left) He had been acting aggressive to my girls but had not attacked and i liked him too. People warned me, told me to put him down, i did not want to kill something that had not actually attacked.
I wont tell you to put him down, i understand why you want to wait. But i would give our boy a bat and tell him to swing if that rooster charges him again.

Don't wait for 'one more time.' That boy meant business. If your husband hadn't have been there, your child would have been flogged. One time, charging at a child is one too many.

Mezzer I have raised many roosters and only a couple of them jumped on me and they went to rooster heaven that night. I can call my roosters by name and they will come to me and I can hand feed them or even pick them up if I need to and they will not hurt me. I believe it is the genetics. My roosters and Welsumer's and they are big and they are very protective of their girls.
When they are young I talk to them and hand feed them treats and call them by name. I also pick them up from time to time to check them out.
Even my grandkids can walk into my run and not have to worry about my roosters.
