Barred Rocks!!

My little Dorking mix/Barred Rock chicks is 4 weeks old today and one of the biggest boys in the flock, which is actually saying quite a lot because he's got some stiff competition. This is one of the friendliest chicks I've ever hatched, and I didn't handle him more than the others before moving them out of the brooder. He's one of the first to greet me and simply wants to lay on my lap and be pet or take a nap. Too cute! And I LOVE his unique buttercup comb.

you get some pretty unique birds crossing them, the breeder actually wanted the BR roo over BO hen I hatched last fall told him if we got more of those I would trade him , offered up a black copper marans for it

The BR broody was fine with having everyones eggs under her for brooding but is looking kinda funny at the leghorns chicks and all the different colored ones, she had 24 eggs under her outta of 30 she started with so far 10 have hatched 1 died though and she is still on the nest. These guys sure do make good mommas. I have the others that want brood on some eggs we were using to check for broodies, all it took was hearing the peeps of new chicks and everyone wanted to brood, and they are doing instead of community contribution to egg count taking turns brooding the 7 eggs we put in the nest.

i tried to get mine to set. we pulled the eggs after 18. i'm hoping it's because the are still young. they are a year old and just started laying about three months ago. plus it's been a cold start to Spring.

well mine wouldn't let us, decided that barred is crazy, now she's looking at the chicks like some of these are awfully funny colored lol

None of my BRs has ever gone broody, but one of my White Rocks is notoriously broody and currently raising a small clutch of very healthy chicks. She literally will lay for 5-6 weeks and then goes broody...over, and over, and over again.

is that common in white rocks?

Ethel is overdue for her 5 week portrait. She is officially the most "jumpy" of the bunch. Not as in skittish, but as in spring loaded!
