Barred Rocks!!

The color of their legs are different, as are the beaks; yellow for Rocks, white for Marans. And Cuckoo Marans are quite a bit darker than Barred Rocks, and their barring isn't nearly as crisp. The differences are subtle, but you will eventually be able to spot them.
Good description. For the first couple of weeks, it can be a bit difficult to tell the Barred Rock and the Cuckoo Marans chicks apart, but it doesn't take long for the difference to be noticed. The more yellow legs on the Barred Rocks is what I used first. As they feather out, the difference is definite.

Oh good. I think its hard for me to picture it because our BR is only 9/10 weeks old, so her feathering isn't complete and she just looks like a mush pot of black and white trying to resemble barring. Which seems also what our CM will look like. Given their different ages, we'll be able to learn easier since they'll look different merely due to one being much older than the other.

I bought 6 pullet barred rock chicks at my local feed store. One of them is starting to make me wonder if it is cockeral. They are 3 weeks old. Please let me know what you think.

Based on that comb development and the apparent slower rate of feathering you may be right. Keep an eye on this chick and I suspect you'll know for sure in the next two weeks. If the comb continues to be larger and redder than the others', and the wattles start coming in quickly, odds are it's a cockerel.

Barred rock you can tell by the size of the white spot on the top of head from chick, at least that's been my experience with them. a roosters from hatch will always be bigger than the pullets.

There is room for error when they sex them too or the breeder they got them added extra roos to the order, Last year outta 12 mixed we bought as 2 days old chicks 4 were Roos, so then got the bright idea of getting 4 RIR's another store had and all 4 ended up being roosters , non the less got rid of a lot of roosters last year, just because they say they are pullets don't always mean it's so, they are selling what they were told they had but what i've seen from people working there they have no clue either.

Ok here is this barred rock at 6 weeks old... rooster or hen?? The comb and waddles make me think rooster but the legs ans color make me think hen.....thought please??? And at what age will i know for sure??

What do your barred rock girls weigh? My pullet is 13 months old and only 4 pounds! She eats well and frequently, ranges several hours a day, lays lots of eggs on a regular schedule... Am I just impatient? Do they grow in their second year? Did I get a small one? Might she have a parasite?

I can't post pictures anymore, but she looks healthy and acts healthy. Thanks for any info!
