Barred Rocks!!

Hello KikisGirls!

Thank you and welcome as well!!

Yes, Barred Rocks and Barred Plymouth Rocks are the same. "Barred" refers to the coloration of the feathers. Plymouth Rocks come in several different feather colors... I'm sure someone on this thread knows all of them.

Take care!

White, Columbian, Buff, Partridge, Silver Penciled, Black, and Blue.

At this point I'll be happy with just girls. I went back to the feed store and they are tell me that I got an Americana, California white and some Cuckoo Marans..I am lost

They were trying to explain to me that since they had tail feathers they were girls.....they were showing me the "males"---the ones with no tail feathers...could this be true?

I'm not an expert, but determining the sex by just tail feathers alone, IMO, isn't reliable. It depends on the breed, age and other factors. Some breeds can be sexed with some accuracy by their coloration when hatched. By no means is it 100% though. Do you have any pictures and how old are your chicks?

1st and last pics are were the barred rocks but now they are the cuckoo marans??!?!? (the blackish colored ones)

the yellow ones...who are getting white wing feathers are the California whites???! -this is the only one I agree on and thats coming from a newbie

the 3rd pics is the AMRICAN...so they call it. Americana?
I have no clue as to how old they are.
I got the on Friday...had them for 5 days now. The blackish ones are bigger...for sure so I am guessing older.
They said between 1 and 3 weeks.....the feed store smarties that is.

Hmmm... I'll take a few guesses... I can say that in the last pic, the chick on the right at least looks my barred rocks did at that size. The one on the left? Kinda looks like a barred rock and also looks like a cuckoo maran. I'm sure there are other breeds it could be? I don't know anything about California Whites... but at least you agree with the feed store "smarties" (LOL!) Interesting on what they say is an Ameraucana... with that much feathering, I would think it would have the tufts on its cheeks? It actually looks almost exactly like my silver phoenix did at that age, including the olive colored legs. Even though I'm far from any sort of expert... I feel it's a silver variety, but of what, I'm not sure. I don't know if you've found the Feathersite yet? It is so helpful... lots of pictures of all varieties and all different ages. Here's the link: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/BRKBabyChicks.html

I really hope some of the experienced experts will chime in and help you! I know there are many breed/gender threads on BYC, so maybe you'll find answers that way. Please keep me updated!

Thanks Jen! You are awesome.
I gotta call it a night. This mess has been driving me nuts all day and worn me out. I never would have thought I could stress this much over a darn chick!
Crazy!
But I'm going to just love them I know it!

Can i get some insight. ..this is a 6.5 week barred rock and i need to know if it's a roo or hen. It definetly acts a little more aggressive then my other chicks and is getting big, iv would say as big as 2 of my chicks that are a week older... Anyways, i don't want a rooster so i would love to see what you all think. This is my first round with chickens so i really don't know 100% how to tell but I'm thinking roo. Thank you!
