Barred Rocks!!

Can i get some insight. ..this is a 6.5 week barred rock and i need to know if it's a roo or hen. It definetly acts a little more aggressive then my other chicks and is getting big, iv would say as big as 2 of my chicks that are a week older... Anyways, i don't want a rooster so i would love to see what you all think. This is my first round with chickens so i really don't know 100% how to tell but I'm thinking roo. Thank you!

Hmmm, I'm thinking roo too. My 12 week old barred rocks still don't have that prominent of a comb/waddles. Give him/her a little more time before making any decisions, and definitely get as many opinions as possible!

I just examined photos of my own BRs when they were about the same age, just for comparison. I'm pretty sure this is a cockerel. Not only are the wattles and comb sizable and pink, but its coloring has a lot more white in the barring than you usually see in the pullets.

Here are my two barred rocks! One started laying three days ago , the other won't be too far behind. I love watching them, they come running like dinosaurs when I have treats!

Today was photo day of my last batch of incubator chicks and I thought I'd share a current photo of my Barred Rock/Dorking-mix cockerel with his lovely buttercup comb. I know this guy, Quincy, isn't pure, but I absolutely adore him. He LOVES to climb onto my lap, stretch himself out and fall asleep. He's now 10 weeks old.

roo. they have wider bar spacing than the hens. these are my roos from last year.

and these are my hens from last year.

i lost the bottom hen so i don't have any current pic of her. and the roos were sold. but you get the idea.

Alright guys. I'm pretty for sure my Barred Rock hen is broody. She is very protective over her nest.but, you take her off of it,she will just go outside. Most of her chest feathers are pulled. She is always puffy in her nest.

Now,a Easter Egger hen was heading for her nest and she pecked it.keep in mind this Ee is bigger in the pecking order then her (Only by like 5 other hens),so it really surprise (This barred hen has had a history of fighting bigger hens.barred rock hen didn't win but continued to puff her mane up,drop her wings, stance but just ran after the first 10 seconds (She was losing.)

But,I took the EE sat them by each other after the fight (making sure things were ok),and the barred hen puffed up and ran (What most broodies do.)When will she be long term brooding,I like hens willing to get hurt for their babies (That way I know the chicks are just fine to be left alone.)
