barring question

Yep your roo is Heterozygous barred with only one copy of barring which makes him darker barred like Barred Rock hens. So he is probably mixed but yeah if bred with a non barred hen like a RIR, half of the chicks will be barred and half will be non barred with no correlation to the sex. If he is bred to a barred hen, all of the males will be barred, half of the females will be barred, and half will be non barred.

Well the lady I got him from was kind of a flake if you know what I mean and me just starting with chickens had no idea. I got 6 from her and she told me she bought they eggs. She also told me they were all pullets and 5 out of the 6 were male. This is one I kept because he had in impacted crop at about 6 weeks and I spent money for the vet on him so I was not going to give him away and kept his hatch mate Penguin because he was the runt. He isnt anymore

But Peng is alot lighter than Lindy. Peng looks like the barred rock roosters that you see in pictures. Lindy just looks a little different. I know it is Lindy's offsping cause he is the dominate and Peng only has 1 girlsfriend my barred rock hen. Lindy has all 8 of the RIR's. Maybe Peng will get more when my other girls are older.

Ok I understand that half will be barred and half will not but all 4 are not. Is that normal? Is it because it was a small hatch? sorry for all the questions but these chicky color has thrown me for a loop. Also I forgot to add they all have black legs except one which has black legs and yellow toes and one has a black comb. Getting more bizzare huh

Most likely that was the reason for no barred chicks.

If you look at his tail feather you can see some that are reddish looking, that tells you he is not full Barred Rock, because they should have only barred feathers all over no other colors.

The flakey lady may have bought eggs and not suspected they were not full blooded Barred Rocks, then again you never know.

Just enjoy your chickens.

Up-the-Creek

Most like yours was also a sex link chick.

Yes it is becuase a small hatch, that half and half would be more accurate with say 100 chicks. When anyone tells you to expect a certain percentage, it is usually based on about 100 chicks. So only hatching a few will give you varying results but that is what it is.

ok that makes sense to me. Now would that effect the headspot? cause none of mine have one. Is that because of the RIR's? Will the males be lighter? cause I have one thats turning a dark gray. Not as black as the others.

It depends, all barred chicks male and female should have a headspot. In terms of the males being lighter like most pure barred rock males are lighter than the hens, then no a mixed barred male is going to be Het barred and should be darker like your roo. But depending on what breed they were crossed with, the amount of Silverish leakage and the messier arrangement of the barring can make them appear to be lighter but in my experience, the barred chicks from Red hens are usually dark Barred like Barred Rock hens.
