I have 2 RIR's. I got them 10 weeks ago. I've now figured out I have a roo and a hen. I think I'll keep the roo and get 1 or 2 more chicks (hopefully girls).

So, my question is this: How do I know if the eggs layed are fertilized? Of course I don't have eggs yet, but I'm planning ahead. I wouldn't mind hatching a few just so my kiddos can witness it but I'm mainly interested in eggs to eat.

Ok, now bash me for being so ignorant in the ways of chickens.

Ok, bash bash.

Welcome to BYC.

The only dumb questions are the ones people don't ask.

The only way to know if an egg from a mated hen is fertile is to crack some open and look for the donut ring or bullseye on the yolk or to incubate them for a few days and look for the veins to begin to grow.

If you have a rooster in with hens they eggs will most likley be fertilized. But you can do as Miss Prissy said, when they start laying crack an egg open and look for a bulls eye if it's fertile and if it's not it'll just be a white dot. Good luck with your chickens!

Are the fertile eggs ok to eat? Ok see firebugfab.....we all ask dumb quesitons. Hahaha

Jolyn - those little blood spots are fine to eat, you can chase em around with a spoon for 10 minutes, and if you can't catch em pick em out with your fingers.

I don't think blood spots have nothing to do with eggs being fertile. Actually fertile eggs have less colesteral, so they are very healthy to eat and don't taste different from any other egg.
