Basket Show August 2, 2009 Fair Grounds Farmington Maine

what do people bring birds home in? should I be supplying some boxes for birds I sell or do people normally bring a cage/carrier?

The last time I went to a chickenstock it was half and half. 1/2 the people came with boxes/carriers, 1/2 the sellers had boxes. If I were you, I would bring a couple of boxes just in case someone shows up that didn't plan on buying something but then changed their minds.

WooHooo...it's the day of the show!

My chickens are sparkling and smell great...I'm grubby and smell like a wet hen!

Let's load up and head out.

I'll see you all there!

It was great meeting everyone today. I bought some saddles from Hoppy, very cute!!!

Can anyone list the show winners for me? I didn't stay that long (DH is just starting to participate in my hobby and I didn't want to push my luck by keeping him too long). Just wondering if Sarah's (from poultry run farm) Salmon Faverolle Rooster placed, I thought he was beautiful.

Did you guys see the size of the Barred Rock pair that was there

. I had no idea they got THAT BIG. I had a Barred Rock Hen that I thought was big, but that pair looked like a freak of nature to me!

Can't wait to see a lot of you again at the Chickenstock in oxford.

Wowsa, what a day! I'm so glad I met all of you folks and had a great day. Exhausted is the word for it, but a content tired.

Poor Scooter...he swooned over all the ladies that came near- two feet and female is all it takes for his majesty!

Sorry to Hoppy, didn't get time to see or chat, when I did see you, you was heading for the exit talking to someone, smiling!
Anyhow, I learned how to find the codes for birds and secretary the NPIP testing.

Met Bill Morrison in person, he seems like a super guy, his companion/wife is a hoot, glad to have made his aquantence. I agree with most people, add the government to screw things up, but even though I have a fatalist outlook (according to one

or two in the club)
its unfortunately a realist view. These diseases or issues crop up in our back yards and we need to remind folks that show birds that these conditions can crop up and fact is, you can lose your whole flock.
That is one reason I prefer the open air and one day shows, atleast it will keep the birds less stressed and lower their immune systems.
There was a lot of folks and lots of wonderful people!
You all have a wonderful day and hope all that came to the Basket show enjoyed it and maybe more will come next year- BIG COMPITITION! Poor Scooter looks like a punk up aside the compitition! (but he's cute)
phew...it was truely nice to see and meet many, reconnect with the members and the signs came out pretty good if I don't mind saying so myself!
The lady in the purple skirt, the one Bob and I kept wondering where we knew her from was at the 1st Oxford Chickenstock and parked beside us with the escaping chicks....

I'm looking forward to the next meeting to see how the club did, its awsome and also to meet a number of our elders, one such being Robert Hawes from Hampden. He and his wife were able to show, if you have never had a conversation with him, you will find he is an amazing guy with volumes of knowledge, volumes gallore, of course he has bred birds, also judged birds. We are missing these type of people, the ones that can judge.

Congrats PRF- You have a sweet girl and she is very proud when she is up in front of everyone. Kudos to her (and you, behind every successful child comes a strong parent)

I'll second that!

What a day and what a big turnout of poultry folk from everywhere.

Along with the show, the food, the auction and the raffles, and the sales/swaps, it was a big social event and I think everyone had a great time.

Kudos to the club members who worked so hard all day to make this event a roaring success!!

It was so nice to meet everyone, put a name with a face- yes spook, that smile was because of the great deal i finally nailed!
both my boys showed and both birds got disqualified. These were birds bought at another show and turned out not to be the breed we were told they were, they are a mix.
I showed one of my birds (a blue laced red wyandotte) and got some encouragement from a top breeder, he really liked her and he finally sold me a bird for a good price. I've been trying to get one from him for 6 months but he wanted way too much for an older bird. Today when we were talking, I noticed his friend, it turned out to be one of my college professors (Dr. Robert Hawes) instantly the bird I wanted was for sale.
that made me very happy.
I went home with only one bird I brought to sell. when I got home I had 5 chicks hatched- 4 guineas and a splash wyandotte. just an awesome day all way around!

What an AWSOME Day! The day Started out a little foggy, Or maybe it was just me, from all the packing and getting my flock together! LOL! It was so nice to meet everyone! This is a great club, lots of friendly, helpful people! Well I managed to sell one of my Serama Roosters, But ended up buying 2 more Cochins from Joanie and 2 show quality black Cochins from another couple! All Cochins are doing fine and loving their Brand new coop!
Spook, Mr. Scooter is a Beautiful Rooster!

I understand that! LOL Not only birds that I have no idea what they are, but that you can see they are kept in a cage with shavings to be gentle with their feathers.

It was interesting watching the judge, he would look at each and every feather, tip to skin in some places. There is a lot more then what meets the eye in judging.

I'm super curious if there are a code of ethics that should be posted while the judge is on the floor. Not sure if its unwritten or not or just my assumption. While the judge was watching, I saw folks walking, stop and looking at birds- that is great, we want folks to see the birds as they are all worthy of such, yet you could see the judge thinking and it is such concentration...if it was my bird I'd want that judge to look at it as long as he liked!

It was unintentional people love to rally around the cages to hear what the judges are saying/thinking! We need a microphone!!!! Some of us
