Bath Time

The chicks I got from school are 11-weeks old today. They are SUPER HUGE!!! I swear one of them weighs 15 pounds already. Anyway, we had tropical rains 18 out of 20 days, and these got particularly dirty playing/laying in the mud. So, we bathed them (this is before their baths). Now, we have bright white giants - thanks to my 11-year old daughter's help, even though neither of us felt that great (but, at least it wasn't too hot)...we do what we need to do.

I've given many a chicken bath...lol. I give mine in the kitchen sink. Are those cornishX??? I've read that cornish are quite docile/friendly. Are they pets or will your family be eating them?

These are composite chickens, which were hatched where I teach. A local university's cooperative extension will bring eggs and incubators in for classroom use. The eggs come from a chicken 'farm', where the chickens are 'engineered' to grow faster and bigger than any other. These are as sweet as can be. One of the girls LOVES her bath. These will be used for egg production.

The cornish crosses have been engineered to grow very quickly. Do you know what went into the 'composite" mix?? I wonder if it's similar the cornish X?? That's very interesting! Of the chickens I've bathed, most do seem to find it relaxing...

2 days later they were still white and happy as can be....here they are eating squash from the garden - they eat starter, meal worms, veggies from garden and anything they scratch. These are so big I let them have free run of the yard (the others are in a 9' wide by 6.5' tall by 32.5' space).
