You have just described me down to the last T.. Astonishing!
This morning I found the chick I hatched in my hand, dead in the nursery. I inspected the body to try and find the cause. I read about it here... I think the term is called pastry bottom. I cant remember. Anyhow, I reconice it immediately for what it was. I inspected all the other baby's and found 3 more. One severe. I washed all there bottoms with some warm water and a clean cloth. Shame, when the one that was the worst, let go, I couldn't believe that such a small body could hold such a large amount of poo. I couldn't remember if I am suppose to separate them or not and I think the cause got something to do with the temp of the bator. So, since they were somehow wet I left them with the others for heat and company.. Yes? It is not a "catchable" sickness, is it? This evening they look fine. Up and running ext. I will just make sure there bottoms stay clean for the next few days..
11 chicks hatched so far.. No deaths.. The last one that hatched late this afternoon is a monster. It is at least twice as big as the smallest. It doesnt want to sit still next to another for a comparison pic but when I move them I will make sure I do get one. He has got a big tummy... Other than that he actually look very healthy. I don't know if his tummy just look so big to me because he himself is so big.
Another thing that is very strange to me. I got only one black australop hen. About half of all my chicks (over the last 2 hatches) is black.. LOL, Is she just one very fertile lady or will there colors change?
I have candled the bator with the over a hundred eggs in it today.. This is how it looks now..
It actually went much better than I thought. There is now 91 eggs left. About 10 of them is "maybes" One in particular is very worrying to me. I see a clear blood ring.. BUT also a chick, formed on the outside (Around) the blood ring. What should I do? Keep it or toss it? At this moment it is still inside. they must hatch next week Thursday.. The long one also didnt make it. I see it got two yolks but nether started.
This is the eggs I placed in the second big bator this Wednesday that is past.
Lady's and Gentlemen.. I present to you.. My first broody hen!
I already cheated her.. I waited until it got dark then I placed 11 eggs under her.. She is a new to all this and not one of the biggest girls around. I was scared she wont be able to cover more than that. As it is.. I think the nest is to small.. Look at her tail. wont she be uncomfortable? Also.. I haven't built a "mothers coop" yet.. Were shall I place her in the mean time? Leave her were she is or maybe in the cress or teens?
If evolution really worked.. I would've had 6 hands..
