Well, we were raising 6 kids on a single income so there wasn't much extra to spend on things besides food and clothing. Now my DH works & lives in Santa Cruz during the week and is only home on the weekends. We are trying to get some projects finished on the weekends but the time is so short and the list is so long! We are currently working on redoing and expanding our raised beds in the backyard. Our yard is almost 1/3 acre and our house is small so there is plenty of room for a garden and chickens. Our goal is to be a self sufficient as possible.

We only have one teenager (my partner's live in sister we've "rehabbed" since 15) so I applaud you living a more self sufficient lifestyle while raising your children.

To me life lessons learned through self sufficiency, doing things simply for yourself, prepares children for the real world in a much better way.

We have one raised bed built now, 20X6 and we began construction on two more this weekend, 18X6 and 12X6. This will be our first year growing in raised beds and I'm really excited that we have finally gotten around to doing so. We started a lot of our seedlings flats this past weekend too and if everything is as fruitful as we hope, between freezing and canning, our goal is to not have to visit the grocery store for produce next winter at all.

Debi, have you grown or to anyone who gas grown it before, what us your experience with Quinoa?

We haven't grown quinoa but love to eat it! I hope that someone here has some experience growing it! We just placed our seed orders this weekend and have our trays ready to start our seedlings. Baby chicks and baby plants! I love spring!!!

Hopefully it does well.

I planted some for us but a lot too for the chooks.

Spring and Fall are my two favorite seasons.

Don't forget about the B/W chicks, either! I have put everything into a spreadsheet and would feel so sad to have to "delete" those rows... You are doing the test hatch now, right??
And did you see they sang, "Jolene" at the GRammy's tonight! Talk about an auspicious omen...!!!

Little grey dude: see feathering and coloring coming in a bit...

Dolly hid under mama all day and I wasn't in the mood to get pecked again...

I LOVE Healdsburg!!! I'd come! I tried all the places folks have listed so far last year (for Steffanie who did a fantastic job of organizing the one in June) when we were trying to do a meetup but none would let us bring chickens. They would work for a B-B-Q sans chickens but I really would like to meet up for this year's Chicken Stock in a place that we can bring our chickens.

We had a blast last year at Clear Lake but the camping sites were full of huge clouds of mosquitoes! The place we met for the event was gorgeous though! Healdsburg is right off of 101 and super easy to get to!

So... I think I may have just discovered my micro farm's next inhabitants, Thrianta rabbits! I'm talking with a breeder now about acquiring a pair. Anyone have a bunny hutch they're looking to rehome?

Let me know if you need someone to take some of those chickens off your hands to free up your remodeling time! JK...When I was young I remodeled my first house (a bungalow). I found that I made the most progress when I turned the TV off. Instead of watching TV after work, I would sand a door, or paint some moulding, or rip up the linoleum in the laundry room, or sand another door...or.....well you get the point. Many of the chores required hard, manual labor not tons of money. Eventually, the house was a beauty.

That being said, maybe you should have a painting party and invite all of us and the chickens, too! No pressure....just an idea....
