Bay Area BYCers!

Yep probably just warm can you open a window, they prefer to be on the coldish side

Yeah good job Hubbie!

You know when I've had a sick hen and it's not of the contagious sort I've brought in her best buddy to be with her. Maybe try that.

Good mornng!

on a totally unrelated subject....

I've discovered that if you buy layer crumbles when the feed store has them on sale, but don't have enough rodent-proof containers to store it all, all your savings will be eaten up by the rat poison you will eventually have to buy.

Darn! I'm sorry Steff.

We bought big rubbermaid cans to store feed in, it seemed like a good idea at first but I have to refill the 5 gallon feeders 1 scoop at a time because once the rubbermaid cans are filled to the brim there's no picking them up!

Do you only feed your girls crumbles? I feel like mine waste so much when I give them the crumbles, but they seem to like it a lot more than the pellets? Maybe it reminds them of their baby food?

Oh man been there done that - I started storing the extra feed in the big coop, that really has worked

AND I have huge metal garbage cans that I got at Orchard supply hardware, they have all different sizes, these even work well in the rain and rats can't chew through the plastic

For those of you who I messaged about a mini meet up when the John Blehm order comes it, I don't think there was enough interest or scheduled ability to be able to make it an event, so let's just plan on picking up the little peepers as soon as they arrive! I will make sure to let everyone know just as soon as they do! Is everyone getting excited? They're almost here!!!

Yeah, I have always used those plastic kitty litter tubs for my feed because I can carry them out to the coop easily. And, I have one of those huge white drums from Concord Feed for my cat food. (Cats have an auto feeder, so I only fill it once a month.)

Luckily, the cat food was almost gone, so used that drum for one of the bags, and filled all my kitty litters tubs. The rest went in the feeder in the coop. I don't really have room to keep so many plastic bins, though, so will not be buying bags of layena in bulk again.

Now, hopefully I can eradicate the rodents from the garage. There are five pianos in there. I hope they don't get damaged.

eta - Jeremy, I tried switching them to pellets once, and they actually stopped eating, and then stopped laying in the middle of summer. The vet said birds are visual eaters, and didn't know it was food. I waited too long to try it. You should really only switch them when they are young (POL), or when another bird shows them it's okay to eat it.

A 50-lb bag of crumbles lasts me about 3 1/2 weeks for 6 birds. That doesn't seem too bad to me.

We store our chicken food and BOSS in the plastic pet food containers that Costco periodically sells. One bag of layer crumbles fits in one with room to spare. They have a squarish, space saving design, are stackable, and are rodent proof. I'm watching for Costco to have them again and I'm going to pick up a few more to store grain. I think that they were around $27 each but worth the money IMO.

I have access to a nearly limitless supply of food-grade-plastic 5 gal buckets. They're stackable and have locking screw-top lids with rubber liners. I use them for all of my animal feed as well as excess brewing supplies. I think I have about 10 in the garage right now that I'm not using, so if anyone wants them, PM me. I can get more.
