Bay Area BYCers!

Kim I so enjoyed hatching your quail that I have ordered more. A lady I met at the Delta Poultry Meetup group a couple of weeks ago was telling me she raises quail just for the eggs to eat & she puts them in salads. Then my son, Aaron, mentined how great it would be to pickle them. I pickle regular chicken eggs & he can never wait for the pickling to get all the way through & starts eating them before they are done.....LOL The quail eggs would probably onlt take a couple of days to cure they are sooo small. The guy I ordered the eggs from from N.C. is the sweetest . He called & talked to me a long time about raising quail. He has 3,000. He uses Turkey Poult food. It's really high protien. He said he has a neighbor that uses his quail eggs for her catering business but he is primarily a restaurant meat supplier & does his own processing.
The guy in Concord that I bought Aaron's new pheasants from has Courtunix quail too, but the small brown ones. He skins his when he processes. Is that what you do??
I wish I had know you wanted something from the Bay Area (Lemon Drop). Maybe I could have picked him up on my travels yesterday. I was on the road from 9 a.m. til afternoon........LOL
Well, I am off to clean & refill water bottles in the front porch. We are working on a possible new system, yet again, so I won't have this to do every morning.....LOL. I ended up hatching out 8 of Claude & Sophies (Jeremy's trio I bought) Blue Wheaten Ameraucana chicks & I had one from the week before that is already showing color on it's wings. Sophie lays the darkes blue egg so I am concentrating on her right now.

We are planning on going all three days to the Heirloom Expo and camping for two nights. Does anyone from that area know if the Spring Lake Park campgrounds are nice? We are tent camping so can't camp in the campgrounds at the fairgrounds. I've heard that the KOA in Petaluma is nice but would rather be in Santa Rosa.

Hello. Just wanted to introduce myself on this post for the bay area. I'm in Oakland. Looking to meet chicken people nearby. I'm by Lake Merritt. I already posted in the intro page.

I know that the KOA in Petaluma is nice, but have no experience with the camp ground at Spring Lake.

Thanks for the info, Walt! Do you know how long it would take us to get from the KOA to the fairgrounds?

Welcome, & good for you. You are close to Jeremy who lives East of you in Oakland. I think he may be up a little close to the hills I am not sure but it's Oakland. I was actually raised in East Oakland near the Safeway tower, but my heart always yearned to come back home to where I was born. So, I am here in Turlock, near Modesto where I was born & love it. I take it you have hens only? What kind??

I'm in Antioch but we do have some members on this thread who are in your area!

I was just in Concord picking up birds yesterday & passed through Antioch & lotsa other places I had never been to........LOL. I traveled over 3 or 4 draw bridges & saw signs of several islands. All in all it was a nice, albeit, long trip & I came home with 6 new birds from 2 different breeders for my grown son. He is my "bigtime chicken helper". I like to reward him with things he wants for himself. SO he has some fancy pheasants & an assortment of Ykohama chickens of his own.

I have 2 6 week old hens. They were given to me by a friend who said they were Ameracaunas, but I really don't know about that. They are of the brown/red color. I am a bit in the dark to everything and stressing over transitioning to a coop and having them safe from predators. Don't know anyone in the area with chickens, or anyone with chickens period! Reading stuff online and it's a little challenging to sort out the different advices. To add to the stress, one girl has a fairly bad cross beak

and I am worried about her. Anyways, the girls are Tater and Tot and I just adore them! Thanks for the reply! I'll search for Jeremy.
