Hi Erin,
Sorry to hear about the Raccoon attack. Can someone on this list donate some chickens to you? If not, maybe a local feed store still has some chicks. The feed store in Dixon had some a couple of weeks ago. Also, there may be an animal rescue in your area that has chickens. I know of one in Grass Valley which of course is too far for you.
I do think it is great that you want to hatch some chicks for them--I just think it would be great to get the chickens replaced for the students sooner. So maybe get four chickens and hatch four eggs?
A couple of months ago in your area a homeless shelter or transitional housing facility was vandalized and 20 or so chickens were killed. Someone donated chickens to them so that the residents could continue taking care of the chickens. One morning a week the eggs were used for breakfast and the extras were sold to make money for the Children.
Good luck! If I lived closer I would pick up some of the chicks in Dixon for you.
, maybe even give you my two Golden Comets. (I live in Woodland, not far from Davis).
Ron
And you live in the area I want to move to, but can't afford it.
There's a feed store on Industrial in Hayward. I haven't been there but twice since I moved out here, but they used to have chicks and chickens a lot. They're mostly there just for feed, but lots of times they'd put out cages of birds and rabbits. It's called Close and it's between Harder and Mission. Closer to Harder.
There's Mike's on the San Leandro/ Oakland border on E 14th or is that International in that area??? Anyway, it's right there, but although I used to go there a lot, I had stopped well before we left the Bay. Didn't like the service, the products and I've seen a lot of gross cages and things and with that many people in there, that shouldn't be happening. The guy that own's Close is much nicer and more helpful. I miss them. They were the only one's around that sold the dog food we used.
I have several eggs here I would give you if I had a way to get them to you. I've finally been getting a few Silkie and bantam Wellie eggs lately. The Favs decided to moult and I don't have other hatched out for me yet and still trying with them.
