Okay Jeremy........out with it..................what are you looking at? I am not into Bantams myself either ....you know how I like BIG, but I do have those John Blehm lavender Bantam Ameraucanas. I will be selling them though in my reorganizing & cutbacks. I actually have some empty grow out pens & only 1 set of eggs left in the incubator. Everyone is growing up fast.

It's taken me 3 years to source them but I think I've found a breeder who is willing to share Wheaten Japanese bantams with me.

I plan also on getting solid Blue Japanese bantams which I will be crossing with the Wheatens in order to work on adding the Blue gene into my line in hopes of creating a Blue Wheaten Japanese bantam. Carlos and I are very excited, years ago his grandma raised what he thinks were Wheaten Japanese in Southern California. She unfortunately lost all of her birds when the Avian Influenza scare happened down there. The county came in and culled every single bird (that they could find) in Riverside County without even testing them for the disease. She lost so many different breeds that she had for years. I can't imagine that happening.

Dawn, I found a few pictures for you.

This is Norbert as a chick, I can't remember if I shared this with you.

This was one of Frenchie's first eggs, they've only slightly lightened throughout her lay cycle.

We're processing our first rooster today, wish me luck!

those are nice Japanese Jeremy

Thanks Walt! I hope the chicks I hatch will somewhat resemble the pair. Now I just have to find some nice Blues, which hopefully will be much easier...

As you probably know....some will have long legs and some will die in the shell.

Walt, I knew about the potential for some to hatch with longer legs but why is there a chance for death in the shell- because of the short legs?

Well. We did it.

I processed my first cockerel tonight, it took us literally an hour, we started at 4:15 and we finished at 5:15. It surprisingly wasn't as involved as I thought it would be and was relatively easy. I'm uploading some pictures now and will start a new thread to show off dinner.

It will go much faster with practice, Jeremy. I should have done a couple tonight but got distracted nursing a sick turkey. He's in a crate in the house sipping on gatorade.

Faster?! I thought getting it done in an hour was pretty fast.

How long does it take you?

I do have 1 more cockerel to do in a few months, maybe we'll beat our time next go around.

lol I am excited to have new babies! My youngest are 7 weeks old and will be ready to hang with the babies outside soon! I brood in my house (in the master bathroom). I like to have them close. For me they do better inside.

Sarah, I brood indoors too. I live in a very old house that has a closed in front porch & we built my brooders in out there right near the incubator so my new chicks spend their first week out there with me checking on them first thing every morning. We can actually watch them through a big 4 foot window while sitting at the dining room table.....LOL. There are a few kinks....I have not found a water system that I like for them so have gone back to the plastic quart jars with the screw on water trays. What a daily job to clean & refill those all the time & they do make a mess scratching around & kicking out their litter. I am always sweeping & vacuuming. Funny how quickly they become accustom to the vacuum noise. I just keep it right out there in the porch where it is close to grab. After the chicks get big enough & are feathered out I move them to a grow out pen that is in a patio of that same porch. It is outdoors but totally covered & I use a 5 gal nipple waterer & larger hanging feeders which makes it much easier. They stay in there for weeks sometimes & then I move them totally out doors under the carport roof out back with the rest of the chickens. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many chickens. J.S. West comes again today with my 3 300lb. barrel of feed that is gone waaaaaaaaay too soon.....LOL
Tomorrow is the due date for my last eggs & they are Frizzled Cochins for my daughter I thnk. I have the door of the incubator marked.

Good luck on your eggs!! I can't believe you buy that much food!! LOL
