Bay Area BYCers!

Wow Jeremy! What a great story! I am impressed. Sounds like Dora understands you. Either that or chickens aren't as dumb as everyone likes to say they are. We ought to start a thread with great chicken stories and then publish it! Heck we should include all animals/pets and give them each a chapter!

Kim, sorry to hear about your hatch!

I never do shipped eggs for that reason. The PO is just too hard on them!

Hey Guys!

So guess what! I hatched an Emu 4 days ago!!! "She" (we think it may be a girl) is soo Cute, and wants to be with us all the time!!! She follows us around the house, and Bill taught her to eat and drink, just like a daddy emu would. She learned to walk yesterday. She likes to sit in our laps wrapped in a blanket while we watch TV. Unfortunately MIL and FIL don't want an Emu on the Ranch, so she will need a home soon. We plan to take her to the Ag swap in Ukiah on April 8th and ask $75 for her, but if a local BYCer wants to give her a home, we will let her go for $50, becuase we know she will have a wonderful home with a BYCer.

Here is a Video of her learning to walk yesterday, SOO Cute!

That is something we definitely plan on doing, as well as covering the runs with some sort of netting. This is the second time we've had a bird jump into the creek, the first was a Delaware who decided it was a good place to lay her egg... luckily it was pretty dry then...

As upset as I was when it was happening, I laugh now, too.

I mean... I jumped in a rushing creek to run after a chicken without a second thought or single moments hesitation.

What a close call, Jeremy! So glad that both of you are okay after that experience! Had to laugh at you rushing in to save her without a single thought for yourself (except for your shoes & phone

). I thought the same thing about myself the other day when we drove in all that rain to pick up our three little silvers. I told my daughters that I couldn't believe that we were risking our lives driving in the horrible traffic and rain just to pick up chickens! But, I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Debi, did you catch the last part at the end about me having a chick for you?

I was in a pretty panicked mind set as I saw her being washed away but I remembered that shoes in the water (at least in my experience) slow you down and my phone would be really expensive to replace (with money that I currently have spent on chicks, so...

) so I knew I had to toss that on the ground before taking "the plunge".

I'm glad you and your girls made it home safely, I hope they are enjoying their new babies! I really LOVE my Silver chicks, they are too cute.

kelseygirl707, I want an Emu so bad! Jealous!

Sunny, someone so should start a "Close Calls" thread chronicling heroic chicken saving efforts! I'm sure it would be a good read.

I'm having pretty crummy luck with shipped eggs right now too Kim.

I received a dozen Black Copper Marans (WJ) and Olive Egger hatching eggs from ruth here on BYC, her birds are gorgeous so I was hoping for a terrific hatch. Well, so far I've got 2 Black Coppers out, 1 Blue Copper and one Olive Egger hatched... so 4 of 12 eggs.

One of the BC eggs has a pip and I heard it cheeping but it's taking it's sweet time. I really hope another Olive Egger hatches, ruth's OE eggs are a GORGEOUS deep olive hue.

HOLY SMOKES! Good thing we have had a lot of water up here and Dolly must have learned to swim!

Wow, strong girlie! I am sure it was horribly frightening at the time--you clearly have the no-thought-for-self parenting skill down pat! I supposed you'll need to watch her for pneumonia in case she got water in her lungs. And I'll bet she and Joel are feeling downright spoiled with a heat lamp, having lived outside with mamahen all this time! Sound like she deserved to be pampered, and I hope you got yourself a good, hot bath, too!!

Babies are doing well, and following the lead of the two SS chicks I already had in the brooder. The Lavs are so, so tiny! Here is one of the little Silver guys:
