Bay Area BYCers!

Once I knew my Silky had gone "broody" I put fertile eggs under her to hatch & just counted the days like usual & checked for the chicks. She has eggs of her own under there too. As the chicks hatch I remove them & she continues to sit until all the eggs have hatched. There are 3 hens in there & they set together sometimes 2 or all 3 at once but if I leave the chicks they will come out to attend to the chicks after they get a few & leave the eggs. So I remove the chicks as they hatch & put them into the brooder just as if I had hatched them in the incubator.

Sounds like you've got a broody commune going on!!

Is it bad when our city ordinance is for very few chickens, and yet we started with more than that....and have now purchased 5 more chicks??? HAHA, someone at work told me I am going to become the equivalent of "the crazy cat lady" with all my chickens! I tell her that she will not be saying that when I bring extra eggs to work to share

Here is a question for all of you experienced folks - is it OK to have all different varieties of birds cohabitating together as long as they are close in size (ie, all standards)???

They should all be fine together in a mixed flock, naturally some hens will be more dominant than others though.

Well, I'm not "experienced" per say, but I have both and they get along just fine, of course they are only 3 months old. My real gauge is my mom's flock and she has had mixed for years. It's the "pecking order" you have to watch, not necessarily their size difference.

My flock consists of a great variety of chickens, large fowl and bantam, different breeds, sizes, and ages. I also have some very pretty crossbreed chickens as a result of letting broody hens hatch out the next generations.

Personally, I think it makes for a gorgeous flock. ("No brag, truth.")

I went to the auction just to see what was there, Was going crazy since I went broke.

Well Makayla has been signed up to show for months, but none of the Modern Game eggs I've ordered have hatched.

Had to use my atm, so only $20 in my gas tank right now, but there was no way I could have left without getting this guy.

This kid is losing baby teeth like crazy. Told her she needs to have the Tooth Fairy drop off my payments to me.

Meet T-Rex!
