Thank you, Kim! At first, I thought maybe Monet had yelled at her and given her a heart attack. But on second thought, she didn't scare easily. When I got home and saw where she had died, I decided that she must have fallen off the ladder. It is a big, metal ladder like thing that some of the young pullets like to fly up to and sit on. She must have not liked them having the top spot and flew up there to take it from them. The cross bar that they perch on is not very wide and she must have lost her footing. That ladder thing is coming down today. I better get my 6 ft 4 in son to help me though. It's a huge thing!

about the idea for the coons!!! They were just stretched out on the branches staring down at us with their beedy little eyes. They were almost full grown but not fat. I just hope they aren't looking for a home and decided that this is it!

Debi - I'm so sorry! I don't know how to deter coons except with a pellet gun and some blunt pellets....my hope is that they sting, but don't penetrate. Fortunately, I haven't had to use it. They do make a motion sensor sprinkler that is supposed to scare them off.....

Debi, sorry to hear about the loss of Beauty.

She sounded like she could be a butthead at times, but a loss is still a loss.

We have a gang of raccoons that come out of a storm drain near our house every night and head down to the creek that runs along our property, I've always been worried about them. Our coops are very secure though, I honestly feel like that's the best defense against the coons. We just have to make sure we're always home around dusk to lock the girls up for the night.

I wanted to also let everyone know that I've collected enough funds to reserve the picnic space at the Zoo, so no further donations are needed on that front. I'm downloading the rental application and will be sending everything to the Zoo today.
Thanks to everyone who pitched in!

I have an OE problem.

I didn't mark several chicks when I put them in the growout pen. I don't know why, but they are about 4-5 months old and I've gotten 3 olive eggs, just don't know from who. They look like my bbs AMs and I should know who is laying this, but I don't. Bon Jovi threw some really good genes. The only one I know for sure out there to be an olive egger is a huge cockerel that looks a lot like him but has feathered shanks. Everyone else has clean legs. I just figured if eggs were green I wasn't using that bird as a breeder anyway. But can't wait to add them to a layer pen. I got the green eggs first of last week??? But nothing since.

Eggs are becoming scarce here. I got 3 day before yesterday. Nothing the 2 days before that. Ziggy and the girls are moulting. Fanny just got those pretty back feathers back in and now they're all walking around with feathers hanging off of them.

I hate moulting!

Oh and I'm almost sure this new little guy )SPPR) is a guy. Just stands so erect and tall and noisy as heck. Not upset though, because this will give me 3 hens and 2 roosters for breeding and hopefully that will help fertility. I really need to try to get a pic of Rockette. She's got that, "I'm to cool for you" attitude and just wonders the yard with Fat Chick, who I'm not sure about. I hatched out a JG and thought I sold it, but that might be what she is. She's gotten huge in the past 2 days. It's like she's on steriods.

OK back to wrapping myself up. Did to much yesterday and have to wrap both wrists and my ankle. At least the pain is taking away a little from my back. I'm now covered in Arnica gel.

Because I'm going to be putting some white rock hens with my spprs I'm going to try the old "food coloring up the vent' trick to identify eggs! Can't hurt

I may have to do that too. I'm going to be adding white and barred to my breeding as soon as I can find really nice stock.

OK I need a favor. I have a thread and I really really need some help with votes. This ends tonight at 7pm and is for the football team at Dakotah's high school. He didn't try out this year, but the coaches want him too. Still he's a supporter and wants his team to get as much recognition as they can. Heres a link with what to do.

Easy for you to say, you aren't the one with food coloring up your butt. You should be thinking about trap nesting your birds and that way you can mark the eggs yourself and not worry about them being a "strange" egg. All you need is some pigeon doors that only go one way. Attach that to a nesting box and when the hen goes in to lay the eggs she has to stay in the nest box until you let her out and mark the egg.

So then I have to run to the ranch several times a day so they can get out....oh man life is becoming too complex

where do I get a pigeon door big enough for a brahma or large rock?

Good point. I just looked at one of my doors and it would be a tight fit for a Brahma. They may make them in different sizes though. Google Pigeon supplies.
