Bay Area BYCers!

Inquiring and nosy minds want to know, what are you dumpster diving for?

There is a gourmet type grocery store here and they let you go through their dumpsters for critter food. (even have boxes right by the dumpsters to use!) I try to go a couple times a week. Amazing stuff, because they are so hoity-toity (sp?) they throw away food that is almost perfect. I'm pretty choosy about what I get so there is no mold or anything but a typical takeaway can be boxes of watermelon, corn, cantaloupe, tomatoes, squash, grapes, tons of greens etc.

Vegetables and fruits, right? You need a friendly produce manager.

The larger grocery store won't allow you to go through their dumpsters because of liability issues, but if you can find a little store, they are usually pretty amenable to it. Also I haunt farmers markets to get what doesn't sell.

Woke up this morning with horrible sore throat an had to go get the kidlet from school mid day because she wasn't feeling good either

. Stupid weather changes...I am thinking chickenstick is out for us this time

I am bummed that I won't be able to join in all the fun this year - unfortunately I had shoulder surgery a few days ago and am housebound for a while with my ice machine and my pain pills.

If anyone is coming in from out of town and is interested in japanese mottled bantams or in a lavender ameraucana cockerel (from Jean Rimmick) send me a PM to see if we can arrange something. Here are some pics of the available birds - all are about 4 or 5 months old:

Lavender cockerel:

Japanese bantams - note that one of the cockerels in the last picture is already taken. One has a "split" looking tail, but I can see the intermediate tail feathers growing in - I think he will have a normal fan tail when the feathers grow in fully, but can't guarantee that.

Here is one of the pairs:

This is one of the pullets

Here is another pullet

Here are the boys with the funky tails - one is already taken.

Here are the parents - they are not available, but I will also have hatching eggs and chicks available from this trio in the spring:

I hope everyone has fun at the chickenstock tomorrow!

Just wanted to post a few last minute things for everyone who is planning on attending the Chickenstock tomorrow.

1.) A map to the Zoo. It's very easy to get to as it's literally just off the 580 freeway.

zoomap.jpg

When you enter the Zoo you will stop at a booth and have to pay for parking, after you leave the booth take the first left. Our picnic site Lion Lookout and should be very easy to find. Look for the big BYC banner, hopefully Nifty will show up a little early and we can set the banner up to help folks navigate their way to the location... hint, hint.

2.) Parking is $7 per vehicle.

3.) Wear layers! We're expecting crisp fall weather in Oakland tomorrow, so make sure you wear clothes that you will be comfortably warm in. However the weather here can change suddenly so don't bundle up in a parka and furs...

Here is the most recent forecast for tomorrow.

We should be dry all through the event (

) but clouds will most likely start rolling in as the party winds down. Just in case the weather turns poor, please check this thread tomorrow morning before you leave your homes. I will be up early and make sure everyone knows whether or not the party is going to happen as scheduled or if we have to cancel the event due to rain. As of right now we are still planning on having the Chickenstock!

Just please, check for updates tomorrow before you head to Oakland.

OK I'm starting to get achy, so taking some Alkaselzter(sp) and I've sprayed my house down with Oxine. LOL

Now for my green tea with lemon grass and honey and I should be good to go. Have to remember to give Makayla her alergy meds in the morning or she'll be coughing and sneezing all day. I think allergies may be my problem too. They always act up when ever the seasons change.

I still have to decide what I'm taking. To tired to cook or bake, so I may pick something up on the way. Will probably be there closer to 12.

Come on guys! You gotta get better and go!

Made i t home and checking out my new babies!

Wish I had made it early, but thanks to Kim's law that didn't happen. LOL

Just wanted to thank everyone for their hard work at putting this together and it was nice to see everyone even if it was short.

So now I need to work on something out this way a but more. I'm giving myself till after Christmas, so it will hopefully be easier for people to afford and have time for. Plus there's the Stockton show coming up soon!

It was great to see you, Kim, even if it was for a short time. The weather made us all want to pack up and head home more quickly than we would otherwise.

Thanks again to Jeremy, and Cheryl, and everyone else who put together today's Chickenstock. I know it's a lot of work. You guys rock!!

I came home with my awesome raffle prize of hen treats. My chickens were insane over them!! OMG!

However, now I am wondering if one of them got a scratched eye in the scuffle for treats. My most beautiful little Barnevelder, Venus, now has a bit of foam from her left eye. No one else has any sign of problems.

I immediately isolated her to a cage in my front bedroom. She isn't wheezing. She isn't coughing. Her nose isn't running. She's eating like a pig. Nothing about her behavior says illness. But, there's that eye. I did a search on foamy, bubbly eyes, but only found respiratory things that have a cough. I'll wait and watch for a day or so.

Keep your fingers crossed for her.

OK, so I stumbled upon Chickenstock by accident at the zoo today! I was there for a Girl Scout event. I wish I could have stayed and hung out!! Goes to show that I need to spend more time cruising the Bay Area thread... Got to meet Jeremy and Nifty... I hope you all had a great time and didn't get too wet!
